Mark Williams sees film as a precision mechanism where money and morality always end up clashing. Before taking the director's chair, he spent years honing his instincts as a producer at Zero Gravity Management. There he learned that a good idea is worthless without a solid financial foundation.
In 2016, he produced The Accountant on a budget of $44 million. The film grossed more than $155 million worldwide and pulled Ben Affleck out of a slump, giving him a character made to measure. That result was no accident but the fruit of betting on a kind of hero who preferred accounting ledgers to impossible chases.
Williams isn't chasing applause from intellectual critics.
His focus has always been pure genre cinema, where characters carry a past that haunts them and a redemption that is almost never free. For Williams, suspense works best when the audience feels the protagonist has something real to lose in every scene.
In 2017, he co-created Ozark with Bill Dubuque and changed the way television tells the story of money laundering. The series moved away from the glamour of organized crime and plunged into the mess of a desperate family in the Midwest. It made audiences sympathize with an accountant who worked for a Mexican cartel from a rundown vacation home.
The production of this series ran until 2022 and earned dozens of Emmy Award nominations. But Williams didn't stay stuck in the production office and decided it was time to step behind the camera for good.
In 2016, he had already directed A Family Man with Gerard Butler. That film, about extreme competition in the world of headhunters, didn't perform well at the box office. But it helped him understand that his place was in the leaner, more direct action thriller.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2020, he premiered Honest Thief with Liam Neeson in the lead role. The story of a bank robber who tries to turn himself in for love fit perfectly with his vision of film. Williams shot the movie in Massachusetts with a clean, no-frills visual style that recalled the police thrillers of the 1970s.
His collaboration with Neeson continued in 2021 with The Marksman and in 2022 with Blacklight. In these productions, Williams worked as director and screenwriter, always focusing on the older man who must take on a corrupt system to protect his own. His films are often shot on tight budgets to ensure a fast return in the international market.
He has no interest in digital fireworks.
He prefers shooting on real locations and with practical effects because he believes they add a texture that computers can't replicate. So his productions often have that deluxe B-movie feel that appeals to distribution rights buyers around the world.
In 2024, Williams focused his efforts on pre-production and shooting the sequel to The Accountant in Atlanta. The project keeps the original team and has a larger initial investment than the first installment to expand the universe of the character Christian Wolff.
