Synopsis of Red Dwarf

The mining ship Red Dwarf, nearly ten kilometers long and operated by Jupiter Mining Corporation, sails through space at the end of the 22nd century. A cadmium II leak on board wipes out nearly the entire crew. Only Dave Lister, a low-ranking technician who was in temporary stasis, and his pregnant cat survive. When he wakes up, Lister discovers that three million years have passed and that he is the last living human being. His only company is Arnold Rimmer, the hologram of a former bunkmate, and Cat, a life form that evolved from the cat. Lister wants to return to Earth, but the journey is enormous, and his relationship with Rimmer, whom he can't stand, doesn't help. Created by Rob Grant and Doug Naylor, the series airs on BBC Two, and Craig Charles plays Lister.

Trivia about Red Dwarf

An electricians' strike in early 1987 halted all production during rehearsals, and the series had to be rebuilt.
The premiere of season eight, in 1999, drew more than eight million viewers, the series' biggest audience ever.
Doug Naylor explained that the BBC and the British Film Council turned down the Red Dwarf movie.
In 2007, readers of Radio Times magazine voted it the greatest science fiction series of all time, even though it had not aired any new episodes this century.
Hugh Laurie, Alfred Molina and Alan Rickman were considered for the lead roles; Molina was almost cast, but left the project because of production delays.
Norman Lovett initially auditioned for the role of Rimmer, while Chris Barrie read for Lister and Craig Charles was first proposed for the role of Cat.
The episode "Gunmen of the Apocalypse" won an International Emmy, one of the series' best-documented awards.
The BBC commissioned a second series after ratings for the first, which aired between February and March 1988, were still not particularly high.
