Synopsis of I Dream of Jeannie

Tony Nelson, an astronaut and Air Force officer, travels in his Stardust One capsule but lands far from the intended area, on a desert island in the South Pacific. On the beach, he finds a bottle that rolls on its own. When he rubs it, a Persian-speaking genie appears and kisses him by surprise. Since they can't understand each other, Tony asks her to speak English, and she obliges. Soon after, a helicopter arrives to rescue him. Grateful, Tony tells her she is free, but she returns to the bottle and hides in his duffel bag so she can accompany him home to Cocoa Beach, Florida. There, the base psychiatrist, Dr. Bellows, believes Tony is delusional, and he knows no one will believe his story. The series, created by Sidney Sheldon and aired on NBC, stars Barbara Eden and Larry Hagman.

Trivia about I Dream of Jeannie

Sidney Sheldon didn't want a blonde genie, because the character would look too much like the star of Bewitched. After many unsuccessful auditions, he called Barbara Eden's agent.
Jeannie's bottle was not created for the series. It was a Christmas decanter from 1964 by Jim Beam that held Beam's Choice bourbon.
No one knows exactly how many bottles were used in the series, although production crew members estimate that about twelve were painted.
I Dream of Jeannie reruns were the first show syndicated outside the network to beat the network competition in ratings.
The series was never a big ratings hit until its reruns. Its best Nielsen ranking came in the fourth season, when it reached number 26.
Before the premiere, Gerry Goffin and Carole King wrote a song called "Jeannie" for Sidney Sheldon, but it was never used on the series.
Barbara Eden was pregnant during the filming of the first ten episodes, so the crew added veils and fabrics to hide it on screen.
The first season had 30 episodes shot in black and white; the remaining 109, covering the next four seasons, were filmed in color.
