Synopsis of The Andy Griffith Show

Andy Taylor is the sheriff of Mayberry, a fictional town in North Carolina where life moves at a slow pace. With a relaxed yet very sensible approach, he goes after moonshine makers and outside criminals, while his neighbors come to him to settle disputes with common-sense advice, mediation and conciliation. His job is not easy, because his deputy, Barney Fife, keeps making one blunder after another. Well-meaning and enthusiastic but clumsy, Barney turns every case into a small disaster that Andy has to fix. The series, created by Sheldon Leonard, airs on CBS and stars Andy Griffith, who plays this widowed sheriff raising his son while trying to keep the peace in town.

Trivia about The Andy Griffith Show

Don Knotts called Griffith during the development of the show and suggested that the sheriff needed a deputy and a comedic partner. Griffith accepted the proposal.
In 1961, actor Everett Sloane wrote the lyrics to the theme song after learning that it had none. That sung version was named "The Fishin' Hole."
The theme song was composed by Earle Hagen, who also whistled the melody for the opening and closing credits.
Neither Griffith nor the series won any awards in their eight seasons, but Knotts and Bavier together earned six Emmy Awards.
Bravo ranked Andy Taylor at number 63 on its list of the 100 greatest TV celebrities.
«The Andy Griffith Show» wrapped up its eighth season as the most-watched show on American television according to Nielsen ratings for 1967–1968, although its ending was not due to a drop in viewership.
After Andy Griffith left, CBS turned the show into "Mayberry, R.F.D.", which kept the Mayberry setting but replaced Griffith and Ron Howard with new celebrities and aired 78 episodes over three seasons.
The series spawned two spin-offs: "Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C." and "Mayberry, R.F.D.".
