The Vaudeville Girl

Mary Eleanor Donahue was already dancing on vaudeville stages at age two. Her mother took her from audition to audition across the state of Washington, looking for a spot in the musicals of the 1940s.

And she got it quickly.

She signed with Universal Studios while still a little girl and began shooting titles like Mister Big in 1943. Back then, child contracts were one-sided, but they helped families survive the postwar years thanks to their younger children's earnings.

Donahue learned the craft through endless repetition and iron discipline on Hollywood sets. Before turning fifteen, she had already appeared in a dozen B-movies and low-budget musicals.

The Cage of the Perfect Daughter

In 1954, she landed the role of Betty Anderson in the series Father Knows Best. It was the job that defined her public image for decades, because it represented the ideal of the middle-class American teenager of the postwar era.

But the pressure of the weekly shoot was suffocating.

Donahue shot 203 episodes of the family sitcom and earned an Emmy nomination in 1959. That contract kept her tied to a girl-next-door image that later made it very hard for her to break into more adult or dramatic roles.

Despite her massive success, the actress admitted years later that she felt strange playing such a well-adjusted young woman. Her real life was far more complicated than the upbeat scripts she had to read every Monday morning.

The Apothecary and the Galaxy

After the end of the series that made her famous, she looked for a fresh start on The Andy Griffith Show, playing pharmacist Ellie Walker. She lasted only one season because she asked to leave the project, feeling uncomfortable with how her character was developed in the storyline.

Sometimes instinct fails.

In 1967, she appeared in the episode Metamorphosis of the series Star Trek, playing Commissioner Nancy Hedford. It was one of the few times audiences saw her in pure science fiction, where her character dies so she can merge with an alien entity.

During the 1970s and 1980s, her presence became steady in episodic productions such as The Love Boat and Fantasy Island. She never went without work on television, although lead roles became scarcer as she got older.

Classy Supporting Roles in Film

Garry Marshall called her in 1990 for a small role in the movie Pretty Woman. She played Bridget, the manager of the luxury clothing store who helps the character played by Julia Roberts update her wardrobe after the initial snub from the other sales clerks.

That cameo brought her back into view for a generation that hadn't grown up watching television in black and white.

Between 1993 and 1997, she worked steadily on Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman, bringing Rebecca Dickinson to life across 18 episodes. It was a period of professional stability in which she could showcase her maturity as an actress in a period setting.

In 2010, she took a recurring role on the soap opera The Young and the Restless, playing Genevieve Atkinson. Her last credited on-screen appearance came in 2011 in that same production, before she decided to retire from sets.

Donahue has lived in California since she chose to step away from the spotlight for good. Her Screen Actors Guild pension is managed through the financial services office in Los Angeles under registration number 142,880.
