Synopsis of The Muppet Show

A music hall-style vaudeville show is staged every week in a theater, featuring songs, dance numbers and sketches. Kermit the Frog, known as Gustavo in Spain, directs and hosts the show, and has to keep his fellow cast members' antics in check, as well as his own short temper. Each episode features a guest star, who must be introduced and kept happy while the rest of the cast prepares their acts. Behind the scenes, parallel storylines intersect with the performance. Created by Jim Henson, the series airs on ITV in the UK and opens with a title sequence in which Gonzo tries to hit the O in "Show" like a gong.

Trivia about The Muppet Show

Jim Henson filmed two pilot episodes for ABC in 1974 and 1975, but neither became a series. Other American networks also turned down his proposals.
British producer Lew Grade got excited about the project and agreed to co-produce it for ATV, part of the UK's ITV network.
The music was handled by Jack Parnell, ATV's musical director, and his orchestra.
In May 1977, the series took the top variety prize at the Golden Rose of Montreux.
The Muppets reappeared as little kids in the animated series Muppet Babies.
In 2006, TF1 produced a French version with Walt Disney featuring original Muppets and French guest stars, but it was canceled after a few months due to low viewership.
At first, it was hard to attract guest stars, but the appearance of dancer Rudolf Nureyev in season two boosted interest from other well-known figures in participating in the series.
The series aired in more than 100 countries and drew a weekly audience of over 235 million viewers.
