The Origin of an Invented Surname

Bernadette Lazzara was not yet ten years old when she was already being paid to appear on TV shows such as The Horn and Hardart Children's Hour. Her mother decided that the Italian surname was a liability at auditions in mid-century New York and changed it to her father's first name. Peters began working professionally before she understood what the entertainment industry meant.

Before she turned twenty, she was already touring the United States with national productions of major musicals. She didn't chase quick fame from magazine covers or easy applause from the commercial circuit. Peters became obsessed with vocal technique and with a style of performance that blended extreme vulnerability with an almost aggressive comic edge.

Discipline was her only religion.

That discipline carried her to Broadway with a force few could ignore. In 1968, she landed her first major role in George M! and soon after starred in the musical Dames at Sea. New York critics discovered that this woman with impossible curls could hold a stage on her own without relying on elaborate sets.

The Refuge of Impossible Scores

Stephen Sondheim found in her the perfect instrument for his most complex compositions. In 1984, she took on the challenge of starring in Sunday in the Park with George, which launched a creative partnership that lasted for decades. It wasn't about hitting high notes but about understanding the subtext of every silence in the score.

But her relationship with the composer reached its boiling point in 1987 with Into the Woods. There she played the Witch and broke the mold of the traditional villain by giving her a physical humanity that is still studied in acting schools. The show became a pillar of modern theater, and she became its central axis.

The industry never quite knew where to place her.

Her porcelain-doll look clashed with a powerful voice and a razor-sharp stage intelligence. So Peters decided to try her luck in Hollywood without ever leaving the stage behind. In 1979, she filmed The Jerk opposite Steve Martin, and the chemistry was so real that it carried over off-screen into a personal relationship that lasted several years.

In 1981, she starred in Pennies from Heaven. It was a resounding commercial flop at the time, but it earned her a Golden Globe for Best Actress. Critics praised her ability to carry a dark musical drama in a market that only wanted easy escapism and special effects.

Survival Beyond Wit

Throughout the nineties, her activity did not slow down despite shifts in Broadway trends. In 1999, she headlined the revival of Annie Get Your Gun and won her second Tony Award as lead actress. The production brought in millions thanks to Peters maintaining perfect attendance at performances for months.

That resilience led her to quality television just as the medium began to transform. In 2014, she joined the cast of Mozart in the Jungle to bring Gloria Windsor to life. The role allowed her to explore cultural management through fiction and prove that her range worked perfectly in the digital streaming format.

But theater was always her safe haven.

In 2023, she moved to London to headline the tribute Stephen Sondheim's Old Friends at the Gielgud Theatre. The show became one of the most profitable events of the season in the West End and confirmed that her name still sells tickets on its own. The production sold out weeks before its official opening.

Her return to Broadway with that same show was scheduled for 2025 at the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre under the Manhattan Theatre Club banner. Presale ticket demand for the preview performances reached technical demand levels that forced the ticketing platform's servers to be reinforced. The 2025 production has an operating budget exceeding twelve million dollars.
