Synopsis of The Odyssey

Odysseus, king of Ithaca, shares the throne with his wife, Penelope, and has just become the father of Telemachus. Agamemnon calls him to fight in the Trojan War, and the hero must leave, although his wife protests the decision. Worried he may not return, Odysseus asks Penelope that, if their son reaches adulthood, she remarry so Ithaca has a monarch capable of teaching him his duties. The miniseries, created by Andrei Konchalovsky and aired on NBC, follows this king torn between duty and family, with Armand Assante leading the cast. The story is set in ancient Greece and across the Mediterranean, where the tale unfolds.

The miniseries won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Directing for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie at the 49 Primetime Emmy Awards.
The first episode averaged 20.6 million viewers, and the second drew 17.8 million.
The miniseries was the first made-for-TV movie in four years to top total weekly viewership on American television.
The creature effects were handled by Jim Henson's Creature Shop, the Henson family company that built the animatronic creatures for the series.
The series was filmed in Malta, Turkey and parts of England, as well as other locations around the Mediterranean.
The ship used in the series was reused a few years later for the miniseries Jason and the Argonauts.
On Rotten Tomatoes, the miniseries has a 79% rating based on 48 reviews.
Armand Assante tried to walk away from the project before filming over a disagreement about the script, and NBC even sued to recover the full cost of the production.
