Synopsis of Shōgun

In feudal Japan in 1600, a few months before the Battle of Sekigahara, English navigator John Blackthorne, played by Richard Chamberlain, washes ashore after a storm destroys the Dutch ship he is sailing on. He soon becomes a prisoner of samurai who don't understand his language or customs. When he regains some freedom, he must give up his English identity and learn the rules of a strange culture if he wants to survive. He is caught between the rivalries of Portuguese merchants and the Catholic Church, enemies of his beliefs and interests. Meanwhile, daimyo Toranaga, played by Toshirô Mifune, fights to seize the shogunate, the highest military power in the country. Based on James Clavell's novel, the series aired on NBC.

Trivia about Shōgun

Clavell and NBC wanted Sean Connery for the role of Blackthorne, but Connery reportedly laughed at the idea of spending months in Japan, a country where he had not enjoyed shooting You Only Live Twice.
Clavell initially opposed casting Richard Chamberlain, whom he wanted to be Albert Finney, although he was later delighted with the actor's performance.
The 16th-century European sailing ship featured in the series is the Golden Hinde, a replica of Francis Drake's Golden Hind, which is now on display in London.
The scenes of Toranaga's castle were filmed at Hikone Castle in Shiga Prefecture.
It averaged a 26.3% rating, the second highest in television history after ABC's Roots, and delivered NBC's largest weekly audience ever.
The paperback edition of Clavell's novel was the best-selling of 1980 in the United States, with 2.1 million copies sold.
The original broadcast had no subtitles for the Japanese dialogue, because the series is told from Blackthorne's point of view, and he does not understand that language.
Of all the Japanese actors in the cast, only three spoke English throughout the entire production, and Yoko Shimada needed the help of a dialect coach to deliver her lines with the correct pronunciation.
