Richard Chamberlain never wanted to be just a pretty face on a billboard. In 1961, he landed the lead role in Dr. Kildare, and American television changed pace. He received 12,000 fan letters a week. He was more than a star of the NBC network. He was a safe bet for advertisers of the era.
But the actor felt his career was suffocating under white coats and predictable scripts.
He decided to leave for England in the late sixties. He was looking for the prestige Hollywood denied him for being too physically perfect. There he played Hamlet, and British critics had to swallow their prejudices. He was the first American to take on that challenge on the stage since John Barrymore.
And the gamble paid off.
The eighties gave him an unofficial but unbeatable title in terms of ratings. He became the king of the miniseries. In 1980 he starred in Shōgun, and cities across half the world emptied out to watch the adventures of Blackthorne in Japan. The shoot was a logistical nightmare in Japanese locations that drove up the production cost.
That was nothing compared to what came next.
In 1983, he played Father Ralph de Bricassart in The Thorn Birds. The forbidden love story with Rachel Ward reached screen ratings that seem impossible to repeat. Chamberlain handled silence and the gaze with surgical precision, hiding his own personal storm (a secret he would keep for decades out of fear of being ostracized).
For a long time he lived under an unwritten contract of silence about his sexual orientation. The film industry was not ready for a leading man who was not heterosexual. So he kept his private life under lock and key while playing action heroes such as Allan Quatermain in King Solomon’s Mines during 1985.
In 2003, he published his memoir, titled Shattered Love. It was the moment of truth. At 69 years old, he decided he no longer needed to hide from a system that had squeezed him dry and then pushed him aside. The book detailed his constant fear that his career could collapse overnight if the reality of his romantic relationships became known.
The industry changed, and he changed with it.
He kept working with iron dignity on projects far removed from the big budgets of his golden era. In 2011 he appeared in the independent film The Perfect Family, and in 2017 he appeared in the third season of Twin Peaks under the direction of David Lynch. He wasn't after mass applause but roles that allowed him to explore old age without makeup.
In 2021, he joined the cast of Echoes of the Past. It is a historical drama about the Kalavryta massacre with a budget of five million euros. The film ended up running 117 minutes and was shot entirely on location in Greece.
