Synopsis of Batman

In Gotham City, criminals plan a different crime every week, and the police rarely manage to stop them. Bruce Wayne, a millionaire philanthropist who lives at Wayne Manor on the outskirts of the city, keeps a double life a secret along with his young ward Dick Grayson. When Commissioner Gordon and Chief O'Hara run out of ideas, they call on the Batphone, and Alfred the butler gets the two of them out of the house with a flimsy excuse. Transformed into The Batman and Robin, the pair race in the Batmobile to police headquarters and set about solving the case, almost always on their own. Created by William Dozier and Lorenzo Semple Jr., the series airs on ABC and stars Adam West and Burt Ward. Each adventure pits the heroes against a supervillain who plans to steal a treasure, kidnap someone or take over the city.

Trivia about Batman

Adam West came up with the project after reading a sample script in which The Batman walks into a nightclub in full costume and orders a booth against the wall.

In 1964, Hugh Hefner screened all 15 chapters of the 1943 The Batman serial at the Playboy Mansion, and the event drew plenty of press coverage.

Some ABC affiliates were not happy that the network added a fourth commercial break to every episode, and one of them refused to air the series.

Batgirl was the first female superhero to appear regularly on television. She arrived in the third season, when ratings were falling.

The original Batmobile from the series was auctioned at Barrett-Jackson in Scottsdale, Arizona, in January 2013, selling for $4.2 million.

When ABC canceled the series, NBC agreed to take it over, but discovered that The Batman's sets, worth hundreds of thousands of dollars, had been destroyed.

John Astin replaced Frank Gorshin as The Riddler in two episodes, because Gorshin's new agents at William Morris asked for more money.

Burgess Meredith had been smoke-free for twenty years when he was cast as The Penguin; he came up with the character's signature squawk because the cigarettes he used on set irritated his throat.
