Burt Ward never expected a pair of green tights to haunt him until his eighties. Back in 1965, he was a nineteen-year-old kid who excelled at figure skating and martial arts. He wasn't chasing media fame. He just wanted to pay the bills while studying at the University of California.
Producer William Dozier was looking for someone with an almost childlike energy who could throw sideways kicks without messing up his hair. Ward beat out hundreds of hopefuls because his enthusiasm didn't seem forced.
And the gamble paid off.
Filming Batman between 1966 and 1968 was a physical ordeal wrapped in pop colors. Ward earned the union minimum wage while performing his own dangerous stunts. He ended up in the emergency room more times than the studio Fox cared to admit. Burns from the Batmobile explosions were a regular part of his Monday-to-Friday routine.
His chemistry with Adam West was built on a clear hierarchy. West was the serious mentor, while Ward was the hyperactive counterpoint who shouted absurd phrases that all started with the word "Holy." He signed a contract that required him to hide his physical features so as not to break the youthful look of the character.
When the series was canceled in 1968, the quality scripts stopped coming. Ward found himself typecast as an eternal teenager when he was already an adult man. He tried to find refuge in low-budget films and brief appearances on variety shows. But the shadow of the cape was too long for Hollywood casting directors.
It was a professional wasteland.
In 1985, he appeared in A Masterpiece of Murder alongside Bob Hope. It was one of the few times the industry let him step away from the mask without the audience suspecting the movie trick. Ward soon understood that his career didn't depend on his dramatic talent but on his ability to manage fans' nostalgia.
Away from the spotlight, he launched a dog food company called Gentle Giants. Its goal was to extend the lives of large-breed dogs through specialized nutrition. He also devoted much of his income to rescuing thousands of abandoned animals alongside his wife.
In 2016, he reprised the role of Robin by voicing the animated film Batman: Return of the Caped Crusaders. A year later, he repeated the experience in Batman vs. Two-Face. It was a way to make peace with his past without having to squeeze back into the original 1960s costume.
He received his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in January 2020. The ceremony drew thousands of fans who still remembered his lines from five decades earlier. That day, the actor recalled that during the first season of the original series, he had to take pills to reduce his muscle mass.
He stands exactly 5 feet 9 inches tall.
