Synopsis of The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance

On the planet Thra, the Skeksis rule from their crystal castle and are worshipped by the gelflings, who see them as their natural leaders. Rian, Brea and Deet are three young gelflings from different clans. When they uncover a horrifying secret behind the power of these beings, they decide to spark a rebellion to unite the clans against the Skeksis. Their goal is to save Thra from a threat that puts the entire planet at risk. The series is a prequel to Jim Henson's 1982 film The Dark Crystal and was created by Jeffrey Addiss and Will Matthews. It streams on Netflix, and Taron Egerton, Anya Taylor-Joy and Nathalie Emmanuel voice the three lead characters.

Trivia about The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance

Netflix's initial proposal was an animated prequel, but Cindy Holland, its vice president of original content, asked for it to be made with live actors, much to the surprise of The Jim Henson Company.

The puppets were built in early 2017 at Jim Henson's creature shop in Los Angeles and then taken to Langley Studios, just outside London.

The gelflings' mechanical parts are operated remotely with a modified Wii remote, while in the original film they were controlled with wires.

As with the original film, the voices were recorded after most of the footage had been shot, and the actors had to match their performances to the puppeteers' lip movements and guide voices.

On Rotten Tomatoes, the series has a 89% score and an average rating of 8.6/10 based on 79 reviews.

Varèse Sarabande released two volumes of the soundtrack in September 2019, the first as a two-disc set and the second as a single disc.

Netflix canceled the series in September 2020, after a single season of ten episodes, even though it had won the Emmy for Outstanding Children's Program at that year's Creative Arts Emmys.

Screenwriter Simon Racioppa explained in 2025 that the team had planned a second season focused on new gelfling clans, but Netflix did not order more episodes.
