Harris Dickinson was born in Leytonstone in 1996. At seventeen he left school with a firm plan to join the Royal Marines. But his drama teacher at the local school convinced him to attend one last audition, and that conversation kept him from ending up carrying a rifle in some conflict zone.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2017 he starred in Beach Rats, an independent film in which he played a confused teenager on the beaches of Brooklyn. The role required him to master a New York accent so convincing that many casting directors thought he was American. He received a nomination at the Independent Spirit Awards, and the phone soon began ringing from the offices of major Los Angeles studios.
Still, Dickinson has always had a special instinct for steering clear of flat, pretty-face roles. In 2019, he took on the role of a prince in Maleficent: Mistress of Evil. It was his first experience with budgets of hundreds of millions of dollars and massive digital effects, an environment that felt foreign to him.
In 2021 he led the cast of The King's Man alongside Ralph Fiennes. The film suffered multiple delays due to the global health crisis, which dampened its commercial impact in movie theaters. Even so, his physical presence in the train and trench scenes caught the attention of Europe's most demanding film industry.
The year 2022 brought a radical shift in his public image thanks to Triangle of Sadness. Directed by Ruben Östlund, he played a shallow model trapped on a luxury cruise. The film won the Palme d'Or at Cannes and revealed a comic, pathetic side that nobody expected from an actor with his looks.
Dickinson isn't chasing easy fame on social media.
To shoot The Iron Claw in 2023, he had to completely transform his body. He shared the screen with Zac Efron to bring the Von Erich brothers to life in a story marked by family tragedy and the sweat of professional wrestling. He gained ten kilos of muscle mass to fit the role of David Von Erich and endure the choreography in the ring.
In 2024, he premiered Blitz under director Steve McQueen. It's a historical drama set during the Blitz bombings of London in World War II, where he plays a rescue worker. That same year, he appeared in Babygirl, sharing high-voltage erotic scenes with Nicole Kidman.
There's no trace of the shy kid from the outskirts of London.
His schedule for 2025 includes several auteur projects whose final shooting dates have yet to be announced. The actor still lives in his hometown and avoids red carpets whenever his contract allows. A24 holds a distribution deal for his upcoming international projects, which will be shot on British soil.
