In North Carolina, in 1969, a young girl named Kya Clark lives alone in a marsh. Abandoned by her family, she grows up with no one to look after her, learning to survive among the water, the mud and the birds she watches day after day. Fiercely independent and impossible to tame, her world shrinks to a swamp she knows better than anyone. Her quiet life is shattered when Chase Andrews, the manager of the Western Auto, is found dead in the mud at the foot of a metal lookout tower 63 feet tall. The tide rises every night, erasing any trace of the killer, and there isn't a single fingerprint on the tower. Also missing is an unusual shell necklace Chase was wearing the afternoon he died.
