Synopsis of Normal People

Marianne and Connell live in Carricklea, a fictional town in County Sligo on the west coast of Ireland. She comes from a wealthy family and is an isolated girl whom her classmates consider a weirdo, though she doesn't care about her social standing. He is a popular student, a very good student and athlete, who suffers from anxiety. Connell's mother works as a cleaner at Marianne's house. In the final days of high school, the two secretly begin a relationship. The series, created by Sally Rooney and aired on BBC Three and Hulu, follows this bond as both prepare to study at Trinity College Dublin, where their relationship begins to strain. Daisy Edgar-Jones and Paul Mescal star as the leads.

The series gave BBC Three its best week on iPlayer, with more than 16.2 million program requests across its 12 episodes.

In June 2020, it was reported that the series surpassed 3 million views on RTÉ Player, breaking the platform's previous record of 1.2 million held by the fourth season of Love/Hate.

In June 2020, Lenny Abrahamson directed Edgar-Jones and Mescal in a mock short episode for RTÉ Does Comic Relief, in which Marianne and Connell confess to a priest played by Andrew Scott.

On Rotten Tomatoes, the series has a 91% approval rating, with an average score of 8.2/10 based on 91 reviews.

The series drew controversy for removing explicit references to The Communist Manifesto and The Golden Notebook, which Rooney, an openly Marxist writer, had included in the original novel.

The scenes set in Luleå were shot in February 2020 to ensure enough snowfall and a frozen Baltic Sea for a scene in which Marianne walks on it.

The high school scenes were filmed at Hartstown Community School in Clonsilla, with real students serving as extras.

Paul Mescal was nominated for the 2020 Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series, while the show also received nominations for casting, directing and writing.
