Paul Mescal broke his jaw on a Gaelic football pitch shortly before graduating. That injury forced him to choose between the physical contact of sport and the emotional risk of the stage at Trinity College Dublin. He chose the latter because the fear of artistic failure felt more exciting than a hit in the mud.
In 2020, the premiere of Normal People during the global lockdown changed everything. Connell Waldron's story connected with millions of people through a vulnerability that never felt fake on camera. But the success came at a price, and the actor had to deal with sudden fame that nearly overwhelmed him.
He wore a silver chain that sold out in stores within a few weeks.
That accessory became a symbol of a new kind of masculinity on screen. But Mescal preferred to step away from immediate blockbusters and retreat to the London stage. In 2022, he starred in a version of A Streetcar Named Desire that sold out within hours at the Almeida Theatre.
In 2022, he shot Aftersun under the direction of Charlotte Wells. The film follows the relationship between a young father and his daughter during a vacation in Turkey, with devastating technical subtlety. His performance as Calum earned him his first Oscar nomination and proved that his talent didn't depend on dialogue but on silence.
And then the call from Ridley Scott came.
The British director saw him in the stage play and decided he should be the lead in Gladiator II in 2024. For the role, the actor went through months of intense physical training to build muscle and keep up with the pace of the action scenes in Morocco. The film's budget exceeded 250 million dollars.
But Mescal still prefers stories about broken people. In 2023 he took part in All of Us Strangers alongside Andrew Scott, a film that explored grief and urban loneliness. Critics praised the chemistry between the two actors in a production that had hardly any special effects.
The industry is watching him closely.
In 2024, he accepted Richard Linklater's challenge to shoot Merrily We Roll Along. It's an ambitious project that will be filmed intermittently over the next 20 years to capture the actors aging in real time. The contract stipulates that filming of the final scenes will take place around 2044.
