The rigor of the British school

Joseph Quinn was born in London in 1994 and grew up in the south of the city. He studied at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA) and graduated in 2015. He didn't waste any time, because that same year he landed a major role in the BBC series Dickensian. He played Arthur Havisham across twenty episodes and proved he could keep up with the pace of a big-budget production.

The British industry doesn't usually give anything away.

In 2017, he appeared in the miniseries Howards End, playing Leonard Bast. It was a restrained, technical job that allowed him to work alongside Hayley Atwell. That same year, he had a brief appearance in season seven of Game of Thrones as a guard at Winterfell. They were supporting roles, but they paid the bills while he waited for something that would change his work pace.

Before moving into commercial film, he spent a lot of time on stage. In 2017, he starred in Wish List at the Royal Court Theatre in London. His performance earned him a nomination at the British theater awards and confirmed that his academic training was more than just a line on his résumé. But mass recognition was still far from the London stages.

The noise of pop culture

In 2022, his professional life took a complete turn with the fourth season of Stranger Things. Quinn played Eddie Munson, and the character connected with audiences in a way even the producers hadn't expected. He became the center of online conversations for months. Much of that impact came from the scene where he plays guitar on a rooftop in the Upside Down.

He was a mass phenomenon who was hard to manage.

Despite the media pressure, Quinn kept a low profile and avoided overexposure in traditional media. In 2023, he became the first ambassador for the Dior Gris fragrance in the British market. This advertising deal confirmed that his image already carried global commercial value. But his priority remained independent film and major studio productions that demanded real physical commitment.

His move from television to top-tier film happened quickly. In 2024, he starred in A Quiet Place: Day One alongside Lupita Nyong'o. It was a silent horror film that grossed more than 260 million dollars at the global box office. Quinn had to shoot much of the movie without dialogue, relying entirely on his body language and the expression in his eyes.

A concrete block in Hollywood

Ridley Scott picked him to play Emperor Geta in Gladiator II, released in 2024. Sharing the screen with actors of the caliber of Denzel Washington or Paul Mescal pushed him to raise his standards. It was a grueling shoot in Malta and Morocco, with heavy armor and extreme weather conditions. Quinn has mentioned in several interviews that working with Scott is like stepping into a cinematic war machine where there is no room for doubt.

And the gamble paid off.

In 2025, his casting as Johnny Storm in the Marvel Cinematic Universe was announced for The Fantastic Four: First Steps. The project is a multi-year contract that includes appearances in other films in the franchise. Filming for this production began at Pinewood Studios in London under the direction of Matt Shakman.

To prepare for the role of the Human Torch, he had to go through strict physical training for months. Quinn has said he prefers shoots where the environment is tangible and doesn't depend exclusively on green screens. The film has an estimated budget of over 200 million dollars, and its release was set for July 25, 2025.
