The Man Who Retired the Old Bollywood

In 2001, Farhan Akhtar didn't need permission to blow up the rules of mainstream Indian cinema. His directorial debut with Dil Chahta Hai swept away three-hour melodramas and cardboard sets in one stroke. That story of three friends in Goa introduced an urban aesthetic and a visual language that simply didn't exist in Mumbai theaters.

The son of screenwriters Javed Akhtar and Honey Irani, the filmmaker grew up in an environment where stories were the only possible engine. But his training was not academic. For years he worked as an assistant director, learning the craft from the ground up on set. In 1999, he founded the production company Excel Entertainment with Ritesh Sidhwani to control his own projects.

And the gamble paid off.

In 2004, he shot Lakshya, a war drama that stumbled at the box office on its opening. Critics of the time didn't understand such a dry military story stripped of the obligatory musical numbers. Over time, however, the film found its place. Today it is studied in film schools for its technical precision and realistic cinematography.

From Script to Stage

His move behind the camera came in 2008 with Rock On!!. No one in the industry expected a prestige director to want to be a rock star on screen. Akhtar not only starred in the film but also sang the songs himself. His gritty, unpolished voice connected with a generation of young people looking for less artificial role models.

That performance earned him the National Film Award. But his massive commercial success came in 2011 with Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, directed by his sister Zoya Akhtar. In the film, he played a cynical advertising executive on a trip through Spain. The movie sparked a surge in Indian tourism to towns like Buñol and Pamplona and grossed more than 150 million rupees in international markets.

In 2013, he underwent a spartan training regimen for Bhaag Milkha Bhaag. For 18 months, he lived like a professional athlete to embody the runner Milkha Singh. The physical effort was so evident that the press stopped treating him as a director who acts and began seeing him as a method actor. The production budget quadrupled thanks to box office earnings.

The public never forgave him.

The Producer's Shadow

Despite his on-screen appearances, his greatest influence in the industry lies in financial decision-making. Through his production company, he has driven the shift toward streaming in the Asian market. In 2017, he launched Inside Edge, the first original Indian series for a global platform. Successes such as Mirzapur and Made in Heaven followed, changing how fiction is consumed in the country.

In 2021, he returned to sports cinema with Toofaan. For this boxer role, he had to gain and lose 15 kilos in just six months of filming. The physical demands of his roles are a constant in his film career. But his real passion always returns to the director's chair when the script is complex enough.

In 2025, media attention has shifted to the announcement of Don 3. The decision to replace Shah Rukh Khan with Ranveer Singh in the lead role sparked an uproar in fan forums. Akhtar defended the change as a narrative necessity to refresh a franchise that has been active since 2006.

The estimated budget for this new installment exceeds 200 million rupees. Action scenes are scheduled to be shot in locations across Europe and Central Asia over a seven-month period. The production has a crew of more than 400 people on its payroll.
