Barry Keoghan doesn't often talk about the thirteen foster homes he moved through during his childhood in Dublin as if it were a daytime drama. He mentions it as a practical fact that explains his ability to read other people's intentions before they are put into words.
In 2011, he saw an ad in a shop window in his neighborhood seeking actors for a low-budget film. He had no formal training, but he had the urgency of someone with nothing to lose.
He called director Mark O'Connor so many times that he eventually gave him a small role in Between the Canals. That shoot taught him that the camera rewarded his strange gaze and the unsettling stillness that makes audiences uneasy.
And the gamble paid off.
His international recognition came in 2017 when Yorgos Lanthimos asked him to eat spaghetti in a menacing way in The Killing of a Sacred Deer. Keoghan played Martin with a chill that overshadowed established stars. His sharp-featured face and small eyes soon became a go-to for directors seeking an intensity that is hard to pin down.
That same year he appeared in Dunkirk under the direction of Christopher Nolan. He played a young man who dies on a civilian boat after an absurd accident, and he conveyed a fragility that contrasted with his tough-guy image from the suburbs.
But his big breakthrough with industry recognition came in 2022 with The Banshees of Inisherin. He earned his first Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor, playing Dominic, a character who walked the fine line between intellectual disability and absolute lucidity.
He wasn't after applause but staying power.
In 2023, he starred in Saltburn, and the cultural conversation focused on his extreme physicality. Cinematographer Linus Sandgren noted that Keoghan can control his pulse so he doesn't blink during three-minute takes (a technique he perfected during his amateur boxing training years).
Not everything in his career has been a success. His appearance in Eternals in 2021 went largely unnoticed by specialist critics, and the project didn't make the expected impact at the global box office. Even so, his presence in auteur cinema remained intact.
In 2024 he shot Bird with director Andrea Arnold on the cliffs of Kent. For this role he had to live among local communities and learn to handle real birds of prey during weeks of rehearsal.
His fee for appearing in the independent production Mammal in 2016 was just a few thousand euros.
