Caitríona Balfe spent ten years walking for the world's most exclusive brands before anyone knew her real name. She walked for Chanel, Givenchy and Dolce & Gabbana while her face plastered entire cities. But she felt like a human clothes hanger and decided to give it all up at 29 to study acting in New York.
It was not an easy road.
She moved to Los Angeles with an empty acting résumé and a bank account that was starting to suffer. Her first jobs were tiny roles in productions such as Super 8 in 2011 or Now You See Me in 2013. In the latter, she didn't even have a name in the credits and was simply listed as a magician's wife.
She took TV commercials and short films to pay the rent while modeling agencies kept asking her to come back. Because in Hollywood, nobody expected a thirty-year-old woman who wanted to start from scratch. But she kept betting on acting classes and low-budget casting calls.
Her luck changed suddenly when she sent a tape recorded at home for a Starz project titled Outlander. Producers were looking for a woman who could carry an entire series on her shoulders, and they found her in an unknown actress. In September 2013, her casting to play Claire Fraser was announced.
Filming in Scotland was a trial by fire in the rain and mud. Balfe had to learn to ride horses and handle 18th-century medical terminology while shooting fourteen-hour days. And the gamble paid off.
The series became a global phenomenon that allowed the actress to negotiate her rise to executive producer starting with season five. This move gave her creative control over her character, something few television actors manage to achieve in their first major leading role.
Her definitive leap to the big screen came thanks to Kenneth Branagh. In 2021, she played Ma in Belfast, a role inspired by the director's own mother during the Northern Irish conflict. Her work earned her nominations at the Golden Globes and the BAFTAs, but the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences surprisingly left her off the final shortlist.
Before that success, she had already shown her ability to work on massive budgets. In 2019, she appeared in Ford v Ferrari alongside Christian Bale and Matt Damon. There, she played Mollie Miles in a film that grossed 225 million dollars at the worldwide box office.
She is a methodical worker.
In 2024, filming wrapped on The Cut, a psychological thriller in which she shares the poster with Orlando Bloom. For this project, the actress underwent a striking physical transformation to fit a story built on extreme tension. Production on the eighth and final season of Outlander was scheduled to definitively close her character's arc in 2025.
The series' original contract required the lead actress to be fully available for nearly twelve years.
