Nick Frost was waiting tables at a Mexican restaurant in North London when he met Simon Pegg in the early nineties. He had no acting training and no plans to step onto a stage. But Pegg saw something in the way he told jokes while they shared an apartment and decided to write a role just for him.
He never wanted to be an actor.
In 1999, he made his debut in the series Spaced, playing Mike Watt, a gun-obsessed fan with anger issues. Audiences connected with the mix of physical toughness and complete vulnerability. That temporary job ended up launching a creative partnership that defined British comedy of the decade.
His move into film came in 2004 with Shaun of the Dead. The film cost just 4 million pounds and ended up grossing 30 million dollars worldwide. Frost played Ed, the lazy friend who refuses to grow up, even during a zombie apocalypse.
That production was the first piece of the so-called Cornetto Trilogy. In 2007, he shot Hot Fuzz, and in 2013 he closed the cycle with The World's End. During those years, his on-screen presence served as the necessary counterpoint to more rigid or cerebral characters.
But Frost sought out roles outside his usual comfort zone. In 2011, he wrote and starred in Paul alongside Pegg, a story about an alien at Comic-Con. That same year, he appeared in Attack the Block, a film in which he played a small-time marijuana dealer.
And the industry began to take him seriously.
His work as an author became clear in 2015 with the publication of his memoir Truth, Desert Island Discs and the Whole Shebang. In the book, he recounts a difficult childhood in Dagenham and the loss of the family fortune. It is a raw account that explains why his humor always carries a touch of melancholy, a trait that defines his best performances.
In 2017, he founded the production company Stolen Picture with Pegg to create original content. Under this label, they launched the series Truth Seekers in 2020, which reignited Frost's interest in the paranormal. The series was canceled after one season, but it helped reinforce his control over the scripts.
Because his career isn't limited to the big screen. He has lent his voice to animated projects and has maintained a steady presence on British television. In 2021, he joined the cast of the series The Nevers, playing a criminal leader in Victorian London.
In 2024, he released the thriller Black Cab and the horror comedy Get Away, which he wrote himself. For 2025, he is scheduled to release the live-action version of How to Train Your Dragon, playing Gobber. Filming for the latter took place mainly on location in Northern Ireland.
