Trivia about Into the Badlands

The series loosely draws on the classic Chinese tale Journey to the West and is inspired by Shogun Assassin.

Most of the cast had little to no martial arts experience, so Stephen Fung, fight coordinator and executive producer, set up a fight camp with veteran choreographer Ku Huen-chiu.

Gough and Millar spent four months finding the actor who plays Sunny, after reviewing dozens of candidates from the United States, Europe, Asia and Australia.

The first season was shot in Louisiana, but production later moved to Ireland, with filming around Dublin and County Wicklow.

Sherman Augustus has said that a fourth season was originally planned, which would have explored the backstory of the post-apocalyptic world.

The first season received mixed reviews, with a 54% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes based on 39 reviews.

«Into the Badlands» was the first series AMC ordered directly without first producing a pilot episode, an unusual decision for the network.

According to the creators, the rain fight in the pilot episode took six days to shoot, compared with the thirty days it took to film a similar sequence in «The Grandmaster».
