Trivia about 1899

The series cost at least €60 million, of which Netflix contributed €48 million, making it the most expensive German television series in history.

Filming began on May 3, 2021 at the Babelsberg Studios in Potsdam, the only city in Germany designated a UNESCO Creative City of Film.

Each character speaks in their actor's native language, so the cast was assembled in May 2021 on that condition.

The planned three-season structure stems from the creators' film training, where movies have three acts.

Brazilian comic book author Mary Cagnin accused the creators of plagiarizing her story Black Silence, published in 2016.

After the show was canceled, a Change.org petition to save the series had gathered more than 100,000 signatures by July 2024.

The first season accumulated 257.16 million hours viewed on Netflix's global Top 10 during its five weeks on the list between November and December 2022.

"1899" received nominations at the American Society of Cinematographers Awards, the Critics' Choice Television Awards and the 2023 Grimme Awards.
