Clara Rosager was born in Copenhagen in 1996 and began working before finishing her academic education. In 2016 she made her big-screen debut in One-Two-Three Now!, but it was in 2018 that the European industry took notice of her name. That year she played Signe in Before the Frost.
That rural drama set in the 19th century demanded absolute physical restraint. Rosager shared the screen with Jesper Christensen, and Danish critics praised her ability to carry the dramatic weight with almost no dialogue. The film earned 14 nominations at the Robert Awards, the Danish Film Academy's ceremony.
The industry responded quickly.
In 2018 she also appeared in Journal 64, one installment of the successful Department Q crime saga. It was a supporting role, but it helped international casting directors see her potential beyond period drama. Before making the leap outside her home country, she worked on the series Forhøret in 2019.
In 2019 she joined the cast of The Rain. That Netflix production marked her first major exposure to a global audience. She played Sarah in seasons two and three. Filming took place mainly in Denmark and Sweden under real cold and humid conditions.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2020 she appeared in the British film Misbehaviour. She shared scenes with Keira Knightley and Gugu Mbatha-Raw in a story about the 1970 Miss World pageant. She played Marjorie Johansson, Sweden's representative. The film's budget reached 15 million dollars.
But the project that defined her international profile was 1899 in 2022. The creators of Dark chose her to play Tove, a pregnant young Dane who travels aboard the Kerberos ship. The shoot used the Volume virtual production technology at the Babelsberg Studios in Germany.
It was a risky decision.
Despite its technical and visual ambition, Netflix canceled the series after its first season. Rosager had to shoot much of her material speaking Danish, keeping the multilingual structure that defined the show. That same year she had a brief appearance in Morbius, her first foray into big-budget superhero movies.
In 2022 she joined the cast of The Serpent Queen. On this Starz series she played a young Diane de Poitiers. The show was filmed on historical locations in France, and Rosager had to adapt to the fast-paced American television schedule with very high production design standards.
In 2023 she appeared in The Last Kingdom: Seven Kings Must Die. In this closing chapter of the Viking saga, she played Erlinda. The film was shot mainly in Hungary and marked her return to the historical genre with which she began her career in her home country.
In 2024, she joined the Apple TV+ series The New Look. She played a young Coco Chanel. The production recreated Nazi-occupied Paris and the birth of modern haute couture under the direction of Todd A. Kessler.
Beyond acting, Rosager explores the creative work behind the camera. In 2020 she directed her first short film, Silence, a 14-minute piece produced by the Danish company Snowglobe.
