Lars Mikkelsen did not start out at a drama school. He spent five years traveling through the squares of Europe as a juggler and fire-eater. It was a physical, raw education that taught him to handle silence before he learned to project his voice.
In 1995 he finished his studies at the Danish National School of Performing Arts. He was already 31 years old. That late entry into the industry gave him a natural gravitas that other actors of his generation took decades to find.
Because his face did not fit the mold of the traditional Copenhagen leading man. He had hard features and a gaze that seemed to judge whoever he spoke to without him needing to open his mouth.
He didn't need to shout to dominate the scene.
During the first decade of his career, he worked mainly on stage and in local productions. But the international market took notice of him thanks to the series The Killing in 2007. His portrayal of politician Troels Hartmann was an exercise in restraint and ambiguity that defined the tone of Nordic noir.
In 2014, he made his leap to the UK with the series Sherlock. He played Charles Augustus Magnussen and pulled off something difficult. He managed to be more chilling than previous villains using only a prodigious memory and absolute contempt for other people's privacy.
And the gamble paid off.
Shortly after, in 2015, he moved into the Oval Office in the American version of House of Cards. There he played Viktor Petrov. The character was an obvious take on Vladimir Putin, but Mikkelsen avoided easy parody. He built a frosty leader who drank vodka with the same coldness with which he signed death sentences.
Many European actors get lost in Hollywood playing generic supporting roles. But Mikkelsen chose projects where his lanky frame and deep voice would bring a distinctive value. So when Lucasfilm was looking for someone for a key role in 2016, he didn't have to audition much.
The leap from drawing to flesh and blood was complete.
In 2016 he gave his voice to Grand Admiral Thrawn in the animated series Star Wars Rebels. The character was a military strategist with blue skin and red eyes who preferred art to brute force. For years, fans of the franchise debated whether the actor could take on the role in a live-action production.
The answer came in 2023 with the series Ahsoka. Mikkelsen had to undergo daily sessions of three hours of makeup to transform into the galactic villain. On set he kept strict discipline and avoided socializing too much to preserve the aura of authority of his character.
But his greatest critical recognition did not come from a galaxy far, far away. In 2018 he won the International Emmy for his role in the Danish series Ride Upon the Storm. He played Johannes Krogh, an authoritarian priest who struggles with his own demons and a faith that crumbles at times.
In 2019 he joined the universe of The Witcher as the sorcerer Stregobor. It was a technical job in which he had to interact with digital environments and complex visual effects. Even so, he managed to give the wizard an intellectual arrogance that set him apart from the clichés of medieval fantasy.
Mikkelsen lives in Copenhagen and avoids red carpets whenever he can. In 1989 he married actress Anette Støvelbæk, and the couple has maintained unusual stability in the industry. His contract for the next production phases of the Star Wars saga includes confidentiality clauses that prohibit any mention of the plot until the end of 2026.
