Synopsis of The Killing

Detective Sarah Lund spends her last day in the Copenhagen police department. She has requested a transfer to Stockholm to settle down with her fiancé, but her plans fall apart when Nanna Birk Larsen, a 19-year-old girl, is found dead after being raped and murdered. With the help of her replacement, Jan Meyer, Lund is forced to stay and investigate the crime. The case grows complicated when the city's mayoral candidate becomes entangled in the investigation. The series, created by Søren Sveistrup, airs on the Danish channel DR1 and stars Sofie Gråbøl as the detective.

Trivia about The Killing

During the filming of the first season, Sveistrup did not reveal the major plot twists or the identity of the killer to the actors, not even to Gråbøl.

In the United Kingdom, the first season won the 2011 BAFTA Award for Best International Programme and was also nominated for the Audience Award.

Gråbøl began acting like a man until the character took shape, because the only emotionally distant people she knew were men.

In 2012, Macmillan published a novel adapted from the first season, written by British author David Hewson, followed by two more volumes.

Torleif Hoppe co-wrote and scripted more than 20 episodes, and later created the police series DNA, which premiered in 2019.

The first season finale drew about a third of Denmark's population, and viewership grew from fewer than 450,000 viewers at the premiere to more than 600,000 in the final episodes.

The second season's broadcast in Denmark drew 1,678,000 viewers for its first episode and 1,746,000 for the second, according to official figures from TNS Gallup.
