The body as a shock tool

Nicolas Bro has a face that doesn't fit into perfume ads. He's a man with bold features and a gaze that shifts between tenderness and pure psychopathy. He graduated from the Danish National School of Theatre in 1993, and from that point on he understood that his place was on the fringes of normality.

He started out on the boards of the Det Kongelige Teater in Copenhagen. Theater gave him the ability to fill the entire physical space without delivering a single line of dialogue. But Danish cinema in the late nineties needed real bodies, and Bro was there to offer his own.

In 2005 he played a hot-tempered alcoholic in Adam's Apples. That Anders Thomas Jensen film forced him to work alongside Mads Mikkelsen and hold his own against another actor's charisma. It was the moment the local industry realized Bro could carry any drama, no matter how bizarre the script.

Bro isn't after beauty in his characters.

He's after the ugly, sweaty truth. In 2011 he appeared in War Horse under the direction of Steven Spielberg. It was a brief foray into the international market, but it proved that his physical presence worked just as well in a Hollywood blockbuster as in a Nordic auteur drama.

An alliance with dark humor

His professional relationship with director Anders Thomas Jensen is the foundation of his filmography. They have worked together on nearly all of the filmmaker's major projects. In 2015, they shot Mænd & høns, in which Bro plays one of the strangest and most unpleasant brothers ever seen on the big screen.

For this role he spent hours in makeup to alter his upper lip and teeth. But the change wasn't only cosmetic. Bro has a gift for giving humanity to characters who, in the hands of another actor, would be nothing more than grotesque caricatures.

Many actors fear ridicule.

He embraces it as a form of art. In 2020, he reunited with the core of Danish cinema in Retfærdighedens ryttere. His character, Emmenthaler, is a computer expert with a childhood trauma that erupts at the worst possible moments. It is a performance that blends pathos with a very precise, technical violence.

For Bro, comedy isn't about getting laughs. It's about playing someone who suffers so much that the audience has no choice but to laugh to keep from crying. This philosophy has allowed him to work steadily without being defined by his age or his weight.

Returning to Von Trier's worlds

In 2022 Nicolas Bro reconnected with Lars von Trier for the final chapter of the most famous hospital trilogy in Europe. In Riget Exodus he plays Balder. It's a dry role that demands total restraint to fit into the dreamlike, decadent world of the Danish director.

He is not an actor who shows up at parties or seeks the approval of the gossip press. He lives in Copenhagen and chooses his projects based on the discomfort the script causes him. If a role forces him out of his comfort zone, then he accepts the contract.

In 2023 he appeared in Bastarden again, this time alongside Mikkelsen as a co-star. It's a historical drama where the weather and the mud are key players. Bro shot most of his scenes in extreme weather conditions across the plains of Jutland, without using stunt doubles for the most physical sequences.

Danish audiences adore him for it.

In 2024 his schedule wrapped up with two low-budget productions in Scandinavia and a guest role in a European television series. He still keeps his residence in Denmark and consistently refuses to move to the United States. His standard contract always includes a break clause so he can attend theater rehearsals in his hometown.
