Sonja Richter is not a typical star. In Denmark, her face belongs to that lineage of performers who prefer silence to aggressive promotion. Her entry into the collective imagination came in 2002 with Te quiero para siempre. Susanne Bier trusted her to play Cecilie, and the result was a sharp blow to the gut of the European industry.
That debut was no accident. Richter trained at the Odense Theater School and spent years honing her craft on stage before facing a film camera.
And the gamble paid off.
Unlike many of her generation, she avoided jumping straight to Hollywood, choosing instead to prioritize projects with directors who understood her rhythm. But the international market eventually came knocking. In 2014, she shared the bill with Mads Mikkelsen and Eva Green in The Salvation. It was a gritty Western in which her presence brought a deceptive fragility that ended up breaking the genre's conventions at the time.
Richter's career scaled up thanks to the Nordic Noir phenomenon. In 2013, she played Merete Lynggaard in Misericordia (Los casos del Departamento Q). It is a physically suffocating role. Most of her performance takes place in a claustrophobic setting that forced the actress to work almost exclusively with her eyes and her breathing.
That shoot took an emotional toll that the actress herself acknowledged in various interviews from the time.
Not everything has been box-office hits. Between 2016 and 2018, she took part in television productions such as The Bridge and Follow the Money. In these series, she played supporting characters who anchored the moral core of much more complex storylines. Her ability to convey authority without raising her voice became her signature trait.
Because nuance is her greatest tool.
Over the decades, her interests shifted toward stories with a more overt political charge. In 2023, she worked on the shoot of Viften (Empire), a film that explores Denmark's colonial past in the West Indies. Here she plays Anna Heegaard, and the project won the Nordic Council Film Prize, a recognition that underscores her judgment in choosing scripts with historical weight.
Richter keeps a careful distance from social media and unnecessary media exposure. She prefers the theater in Copenhagen. On the stage of the Det Kongelige Teater, she has performed everything from Shakespeare classics to contemporary dramas that demand total physical commitment.
Her fee per production stays in line with the standards of high-end European independent cinema.
In 2024, she wrapped filming on the series Graverne for the TV channel 2. The production company's confidentiality agreement prevented any details about her character from leaking until the official premiere. The series was sold to three international markets before airing its first episode.
