Jakob Oftebro has two distinct voice registers because he lives between two languages. In 2004, the Oslo National Academy of the Arts turned him down, and that turned out to be his biggest stroke of luck. He moved to Denmark to study and learned to act in Danish with a precision that still confounds casting directors today.
Language became his survival tool.
His father is veteran Nils Ole Oftebro, but Jakob avoided the easy route of trading on the family name in Norway. During his training years at the Statens Teaterskole in Copenhagen, he realized the Scandinavian market demands total mobility. And so he began jumping from one border to another without asking for permission.
In 2012, he joined the cast of Kon-Tiki. The film retold Thor Heyerdahl's epic voyage and put him on the international map when it earned an Oscar nomination. But Oftebro didn't want to be just the blond supporting player in a sea epic.
He sought out projects where the body truly suffered. For the shoot of Guldkysten in 2015, he drastically reduced his weight until he was all skin and bones. He wanted to convey the decline of a botanist in 19th-century Danish Guinea, and the result was a physical performance that came close to collapse.
And the gamble paid off.
Shortly after, he joined 1864, one of the most expensive series in Danish television. He played Laust Jensen in the middle of a bloody war against Prussia. The shoot was a military logistics operation that required him to spend months among real trenches and large-scale pyrotechnic effects.
In 2020, he took on the challenge of inheriting the role of Carl Hamilton. It was a part previously played by heavyweights such as Mikael Persbrandt and Peter Stormare. Oftebro gave this Swedish James Bond a drier, more direct edge as he moves through the underworld of Stockholm.
Because the actor prefers silence to explanatory dialogue.
In 2021, he worked on Margrete: Queen of the North under the direction of Charlotte Sieling. It was a 10-million-euro production shot mainly in the Czech Republic. In this medieval political drama, he played a man who claims to be the queen's dead son, a role based on the mystery of the False Olaf.
In 2024, he appeared in the action series Sthlm Blackout and in the new adaptation of Ronja the Robber's Daughter. His filming schedule for 2025 includes productions that keep up this bilingual pace of work between Copenhagen and Oslo. The distribution deal for his latest project in Sweden was closed for a sum that has not been disclosed by the trade press.
