A Pilot on the Film Set

Dar Salim had a steady salary and a fixed route among the clouds before ever stepping onto a set. He worked as a commercial pilot in Denmark, and acting was entirely foreign to him. Everything changed when he accompanied a friend to an audition and ended up landing the lead role on pure instinct.

The sky was his place; film was the accident.

In 2008, he starred in Gå med fred, Jamil, and Danish critics recognized that this hard-eyed man was no amateur. The film explored guilt and revenge in a Muslim community in Copenhagen. It was a small release, but it helped casting directors note his name on the list of tough guys with depth.

And the gamble paid off.

Despite his Iraqi origins, he always avoided the flat, stock terrorist roles that Hollywood tends to offer actors with his profile. He preferred to stay in Scandinavia for a few years and take part in projects such as the series Borgen and the Swedish production The Bridge. In 2011, he got the chance to join Game of Thrones, playing Qotho (one of Khal Drogo's trusted riders) during the first season.

That shoot in Malta taught him how the machinery of a major American production works. But Dar Salim did not want to be a luxury extra in other people's series. His real goal was to lead stories where the dramatic weight rested on his shoulders, not on his ability to ride a horse.

Violence as a commercial language

In 2017, he shot Underverden, and Nordic noir found a new benchmark. He played a successful surgeon who descends into the underworld of organized crime to avenge his brother's death. The film did so well that it grossed nearly 30 million Danish kroner in its local market and spawned a sequel years later.

There was no turning back.

That success allowed him to choose projects with greater creative freedom. He alternated action films with psychological dramas in which silence says more than gunfire. In 2022, he appeared in the German action film Black Crab for a streaming platform, and his face became familiar in homes around the world.

But his big international breakthrough didn't come until Guy Ritchie put a script on his desk. The British director was looking for someone who could hold his own opposite Jake Gyllenhaal without flinching. So he hired him to shoot The Covenant in 2023.

The Big Leap to Global Studios

In The Covenant, he played Ahmed, an Afghan interpreter who risks his life to save an American sergeant. The chemistry between the two leads was the engine of the film, and specialized critics noted that Salim was not a supporting player but the soul of the story. His performance received unanimous praise for the restraint and physical strength he brought to the character.

That job opened the doors of the British film industry wide open. In 2024, he joined the cast of the Netflix series The Gentlemen under Ritchie's direction once again. He plays a bodyguard with a very particular philosophy of life and a tense calm that dominates every scene he appears in.

Dar Salim's career is an anomaly in an industry that usually demands formal training from adolescence. He arrived late, from a technical profession that has nothing to do with dramatic art. Perhaps that is why his acting is free of theatrical mannerisms and relies on a physical presence that fills the frame effortlessly.

In 2023, Underworld II premiered, closing the chapter on his most beloved character in Denmark. Filming for the sequel lasted 42 calendar days and had a production budget of 22 million kroner. Barring last-minute surprises, the shoot moved to London for most of 2024.
