Birgitte Hjort Sørensen is not your typical method actress. In 2010, she auditioned for Borgen with a mix of ambition and caution that ended up defining Katrine Fønsmark. Playing that idealistic journalist required a cool, technical detachment that few graduates of the Danish National School of Theatre could project so naturally on camera.
The impact was immediate.
We're talking about a woman who understands silence as a storytelling tool. In 2012, she starred in Marie Krøyer under the direction of Bille August, where she learned that northern light can be as cruel as a bad line of dialogue. Yet her face was already associated with fictional newsroom drama in the minds of European viewers.
Success in Denmark can be a glass trap if you don't know how to handle the leap abroad. Sørensen avoided empty offers and preferred to wait for the phone to ring with projects that challenged her vocal range. That strategy let her keep control over a career that steered clear of the offices of the major Los Angeles agents.
HBO came calling in 2015 for a single episode of Game of Thrones. She played Karsi in the episode titled Hardhome, and needed only twenty minutes on screen for the specialized press to demand a return that never happened due to the demands of the script. That role unexpectedly opened the doors to major American productions.
That same year she appeared in Pitch Perfect 2, playing the leader of a German a cappella group. It was a commercial leap into the unknown that few in Copenhagen understood, but she defended it as an exercise in pure physical comedy. The actress was looking to break away from the serious, buttoned-up image that Danish television had imposed on her for five years.
Hollywood is not always right.
In 2016, she filmed Vinyl alongside Martin Scorsese and Mick Jagger, in a project that was supposed to be the biggest TV event of the decade. The series was canceled after a single season, and Sørensen had to rethink her priorities in the industry. She returned to the London stage to take on Tom Hiddleston in a production of Coriolanus that sold out within hours.
In 2018, she starred in Greyzone, a thriller about terrorism that let her explore the vulnerability of an engineer under pressure. Filming took place across Scandinavia and Germany, with a crew that prioritized realism over spectacle. But her true reconnection with audiences came a little later.
In 2022 she returned to her role in Borgen: Kingdom, Power and Glory to portray an older version of her most famous character. Fønsmark was no longer a young woman eager to change the world but a news director worn down by bureaucracy. The production sold its distribution rights to Netflix to secure its global reach before filming began.
During 2023 she joined the cast of the crime series Darkness: Those Who Kill and appeared in the political drama Oxen. In these productions her name appears in the credits with real weight, allowing her to choose projects with fewer shooting days. Her screen presence has therefore become more selective and tied to socially driven stories.
Recording her voice work for the animated series Twilight of the Gods in 2024 took place entirely in soundproof booths, through six-hour work sessions.
