Emily Beecham won the Best Actress award at the Cannes Film Festival in 2019 for her role in Little Joe. It was a straightforward honor that caught many by surprise. But for those who had followed her career since her school days in London, the award only confirmed an old suspicion. Beecham was born in Manchester in 1984 and grew up with the Anglo-American duality that makes switching between accents feel effortless.
Her training at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA) wrapped up in 2006. That same year, she landed her first professional role in the thriller Bon Voyage. There were no immediate red carpets. For a decade, she picked up brief appearances in British TV series and independent films that barely made a ripple at the box office.
She knew how to wait.
In 2017, Daphne arrived. Peter Mackie Burns's film worked as a showcase for raw realism, with Beecham carrying the full weight of the narrative. She played a woman trapped in London's cynicism. That role opened the door to physical action in the series Into the Badlands.
For three seasons, she played The Widow. She trained in martial arts and learned to handle the sword with a choreographed precision that contrasted with her previous image as a character actress. The series ended in 2019. It was a period of intense physical wear and tear that allowed her to finance riskier projects in European cinema.
Because Beecham has always preferred the control of the smallest gesture over dramatic explosion. In Little Joe, she played a scientist who develops a plant capable of altering people's moods. The coldness of her performance earned her the most important international recognition of her professional career up to that point.
Taking risks always pays off.
In 2021, she appeared in Cruella for Disney, playing Catherine Miller. But the project that demanded the greatest technical effort was 1899 in 2022. The Netflix series used the Volume virtual production technology to recreate an ocean liner on a soundstage in Germany. Beecham led an international cast in a production that cost more than 60 million euros and was canceled after its first batch of episodes.
In 2023, she shot The Covenant under the direction of Guy Ritchie. The script required an emotional restraint that served as a counterpoint to the violence of the conflict in Afghanistan. She shot her scenes mainly in locations in Alicante (Spain) that simulated the arid terrain of the Middle East.
And the gamble paid off.
For 2024, she worked on the science fiction film Slingshot alongside Casey Affleck. The movie was shot mainly at the Korda Studios in Budapest. It's a work environment Beecham knows well (she had already filmed in Hungary before) and where she feels at ease with the rhythms of big-budget European co-productions.
In 2024, she also joined the cast of William Tell under the direction of Nick Hamm. The production featured costume designs specifically built to withstand the freezing temperatures of the Alpine locations. The production budget for this film exceeded $ 30 million during its initial shoot.
