Matthew McNulty was born Michael Anthony McNulty in 1982. He had to give up his first name to work, because the actors' union already had another Michael on its rolls. This early administrative change says a lot about his career: a steady presence who prefers the anonymity of the character to the glare of celebrity.
His first steps in British television were low-key. He appeared in medical and procedural dramas straight out of the textbook. But in 2009, his luck changed when he worked with Ken Loach on Looking for Eric. The director was looking for that mix of toughness and vulnerability found only in men from northern England.
He's a familiar face with a name that's hard to pin down.
In 2010, he joined the cast of Misfits as Seth. His role as the power-dealing dealer gave him a distinct visibility among young audiences. He wasn't after top billing. He was content to anchor the most fantastical storylines with a sober, restrained performance.
Before shooting, he reads the script looking for the character's cracks. McNulty isn't a loud method actor. He prefers to build from silence and minimal gestures. So his move toward more mature roles in prestige television was a natural step in his career.
His acting maturity came with projects of greater historical weight. In 2018, he joined the cast of The Terror. He played Lieutenant Edward Little in a production that demanded real physical strain under layers of makeup and artificial cold. The AMC series was a technical turning point in how he approached survival drama.
Then came his foray into classic epics. In 2021, he took on the role of Gaius Gallus in the series Domina. Shooting at the Cinecittà Studios in Rome marked a complete change of scale in his career. Playing a Roman politician demands a restraint in gesture that McNulty pulls off with apparent ease.
The British industry tends to typecast actors based on their accent.
McNulty sidestepped that trap by jumping between genres. In 2022, he starred in The Rising and soon after joined the cast of The Bay. He worked on more than fifty productions before turning forty. That number says more about his work ethic than his ambition for awards.
In 2023, he appeared in the film Dead Shot and filmed scenes for the BBC-produced adaptation of Great Expectations. His contract for the latter project included strict clauses about availability for reshoots in London. Filming wrapped on schedule without budget issues.
