Antonia Thomas didn't wait to finish her studies at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School to make her way in the business. In 2009, she landed the role of Alisha Daniels the day before her graduation.
That project was Misfits. The show was filmed in a gray London setting and followed young delinquents with useless superpowers. Nobody expected a low-budget production for E4 to end up winning a BAFTA in 2010.
She was the magnetic center of that controlled disaster.
But Thomas decided to leave after the third season. It was a risky move for any young actress in the United Kingdom, where being forgotten is often the norm. She preferred to look for stories that wouldn't force her to wear a prison orange jumpsuit for half a decade.
In 2014, she took on the lead role in a romantic comedy called Scrotal Recall. The title was so awful that it nearly sank the series before anyone watched the first episode. But the script was so strong that Netflix bought the global distribution rights.
The platform renamed Lovesick in 2016 to keep viewers from thinking it was a B-movie. It worked. The show became a niche hit that ran for three seasons and put her face on televisions across half the world.
In 2015, she also appeared in the music video for Coldplay's song Charlie Brown. It was a paying gig, but it helped her understand how major international productions worked. Because her next step was not going to be in Europe.
Her move to American television came through David Shore.
In 2017, she moved to Canada to film The Good Doctor. She played Dr. Claire Browne and faced a grueling work schedule that involved filming 20 episodes a year. It was a machine that demanded absolute physical discipline given the number of hours on set.
But she held on for four full seasons. Her departure from the show in 2021 was not due to a lack of work or conflicts with the crew. She wanted to explore her side as an executive producer and return to projects with a different narrative weight.
Four years later, she asked to leave the series.
In 2020, she took part in the anthology Small Axe, directed by Steve McQueen. In the episode Red, White and Blue, she shared the screen with John Boyega. It was a return to her British roots and to auteur cinema, far from the sterile hospital corridors of fiction.
In 2023, she returned to comedy with Still Up for Apple TV+. It tells the story of two insomniacs who spend the night talking on the phone. Critics praised the chemistry between the leads in a format that relies entirely on dialogue and silence.
Filming of the horror movie Baghead in 2024 wrapped with a production budget of less than 5 million dollars.
