Iwan Rheon has that look that makes people uncomfortable without saying a single word. On the set of Game of Thrones, many actors avoided making eye contact with him during breaks. It's not that he was a tough guy. It's that his portrayal of Ramsay Bolton left such a mark that the sadist label followed him for years.
And the gamble paid off.
He grew up in Cardiff speaking Welsh as his first language. In fact, he recorded his first songs in that language before London opened the doors of the music industry to him. In 2009, he won an Olivier Award for the musical Spring Awakening. That was the real driving force behind his career on British stages.
But the general public knew him as the invisible boy in Misfits.
He originally auditioned for the role of Jon Snow. The producers saw something different in him and chose to save him for the Bolton bastard. His contract forbade him from cutting his hair in any particular way, to maintain the image of grime and constant danger the character required.
He spent four seasons torturing characters and viewers alike. Filming the Battle of the Bastards in 2016 marked the end of his time in Westeros. That sequence required twenty-five days of filming just for the final battle in the mud.
Rheon always says that the day he finished filming that scene, he felt a real sense of physical relief.
In 2015 he released his first studio album, titled Dinard. It's an acoustic folk work that has nothing to do with the violence of his most famous characters. Because Rheon prefers the calm of a guitar to the noise of Hollywood red carpets.
He tried to break into superhero movies with Inhumans in 2017.
The series was a critical and commercial failure and was canceled after just one season. But that didn't slow his work pace at all. In 2019, he played Mick Mars in the Mötley Crüe biopic titled The Dirt. He had to learn to move like a guitarist with a degenerative bone disease to make the role feel real.
By 2024, he was working under Roland Emmerich on the gladiator series Those About to Die. He plays Tenax, a man who runs the underworld of betting in ancient Rome. The production's budget exceeded 140 million dollars.
