Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson graduated from the Iceland Academy of the Arts in 2005. His initial life plan did not include airports or large production caravans in London or Los Angeles. For nearly a decade, the National Theatre of Iceland was his only professional home.
The Icelandic industry is small, and actors there usually do a bit of everything to pay the bills. He combined classic stage plays with voice-over work and small roles in local film. But his physique called for a larger scale of production.
In 2016 his name appeared in the credits of Game of Thrones. He played Lem Lemoncloak in two episodes, which led international agents to focus on his beard and height. That outlaw role changed his priorities and forced him to seek representation beyond his native island.
It was the start of a constant move from place to place.
Many actors in his field fall into the trap of the eternal warrior. Jóhannesson has played Vikings and barbarians on many occasions, but he always tries to bring a bit of humanity to the steel. In 2017 he shot Atomic Blonde alongside Charlize Theron and made it clear that he could fit into modern action cinema with ease.
The secret of this Icelander isn't just his broad shoulders. In 2018 he starred in Alpha, where the weight of the film rested almost entirely on his relationship with nature. That ability to hold a close-up without saying a word opened the doors of streaming platforms for good.
Netflix and HBO productions became his natural habitat in the following years. In 2022 he took part in Vikings: Valhalla, playing Olaf Haraldsson. It was a grueling physical job that required hours of training with real weapons on muddy sets in Ireland.
Contracts started piling up quickly.
The risk of being typecast in historical roles was real. So in 2023 he accepted the role of Oskar Gudjohnsen in the fourth season of Succession. He traded chain mail for designer suits and sharp dialogue in the luxury corporate settings of New York.
That change of pace was key to his career in the United States. He was no longer just the tough guy from the north. He was an actor capable of handling dark comedy and the psychological tension of one of the most awarded series of the decade.
In 2024, he joined the cast of Those About to Die under the direction of Roland Emmerich. The gladiator series once again demanded a notable physical effort on the Cinecittà set in Rome. But his interest was already focused on science fiction projects with a much more cerebral tone.
And the gamble paid off.
For 2025, he is scheduled to appear in the second season of Severance for Apple TV+. Filming was carried out under strict confidentiality measures in New York. The production had a budget of more than 20 million dollars per episode.
