Rutger Hauer died at his home in Beetsterzwaag on July 19, 2019. He was 75 years old and had a filmography of more than 170 titles across film and television. Before becoming a recurring presence in American genre cinema, he was Paul Verhoeven's favorite actor in the Netherlands.
In 1973, he starred in Turkish Delight. The film broke box office records in his country and earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Foreign Language Film. Hauer played a bohemian sculptor with a physical energy few European actors of that era could match.
And the gamble paid off.
His move to the United States was no accident. In 1981, he made his Hollywood film debut in Nighthawks. He played a terrorist who put Sylvester Stallone in jeopardy. Hauer insisted on one condition for the role: he didn't want to be a flat, typical action-movie villain. He brought a surgical coldness that unsettled Stallone himself during the shoot.
Ridley Scott cast him in Blade Runner in 1982. His role as Roy Batty is the turning point of his career. The night before shooting the final scene, he decided the original script was too long and over-explanatory. Hauer trimmed the dialogue on his own and added the line about tears in the rain.
It was a purely instinctive decision.
Hauer was paid $600,000 for that job, a figure that seems ridiculous today for a character who defined the look of modern science fiction. But after that peak of fame, the actor preferred auteur projects and independent productions.
In 1985, he starred in Ladyhawke alongside Michelle Pfeiffer. The shoot was a logistical mess in Italian locations, so Hauer decided to buy a huge trailer to travel across Europe between takes. He had no interest in luxury hotels or the protocol of conventional movie stars.
But the market changed soon.
By the late 1980s his commercial appeal began to fade. He turned down roles in big-budget blockbusters to focus on films like The Hitcher in 1986. His performance as John Ryder is a masterclass in creating terror without special effects. He only needed a look.
During the 1990s he turned to the video and TV movie market. He filmed in places like South Africa and the Philippines to maintain his financial independence. In 2005, Christopher Nolan brought him back to the mainstream audience in Batman Begins. He played William Earle, the executive trying to take over Wayne Industries.
In 2011, he surprised critics again with Hobo with a Shotgun. It was an extremely violent exploitation film that recalled his wilder early days. He filmed his final scenes for the series The Last Kingdom in 2017, playing an elderly Viking king.
The funeral was held in strict privacy in his hometown five days after his death. His foundation dedicated to the fight against AIDS inherited much of his future image rights.
