Elizabeth Debicki is six feet two inches tall. That height shaped her early years in the industry, because casting directors did not know where to place a woman who forced camera lenses to be readjusted. In 2011, she made a brief debut in the comedy A Few Best Men, but her real entry into the international circuit came in 2013.
Baz Luhrmann chose her to play Jordan Baker in The Great Gatsby after watching an audition tape recorded in Australia. The director wanted a presence reminiscent of Art Deco statues, and Debicki fit that rigid geometry. But the actress did not want to be merely a decorative element in the shots of Leonardo DiCaprio.
It was a purely physical decision.
After studying ballet as a teenager in Melbourne, she accepted that her height kept her off dance stages. So she channeled that physical discipline into dramatic acting. In 2016, the British production The Night Manager paired her with Tom Hiddleston in a role that demanded a taut fragility. International critics began to take notice of her ability to command the space without saying a single word.
In 2018, she filmed Widows under Steve McQueen's direction, where her character evolved from submission to economic independence. It was the moment Hollywood realized her physique was not an obstacle but a powerful narrative tool. The film grossed 76 million dollars worldwide and earned her the respect of the most auteur-driven sectors of American cinema.
And the risk was worth it.
Christopher Nolan called her in 2020 for Tenet with one clear instruction: she should not hide her height next to Kenneth Branagh. During that shoot, the actress had to learn to drive high-end cars while performing action scenes choreographed down to the millimeter. The production spent more than $200 million, and Debicki was the emotional anchor of a plot designed like a physical puzzle.
But her big leap in public recognition came when she accepted the role of Diana, Princess of Wales, in the series The Crown. She appeared in the fifth and sixth seasons, which aired between 2022 and 2023. To prepare, she studied hundreds of hours of documentary footage to replicate the Princess of Wales's head tilt and downcast gaze without slipping into cheap parody.
Nobody expected that silence on set.
In 2024, the Television Academy presented her with the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series for her performance in the later seasons of the Netflix series. This award closed a cycle of constant comparisons with other actresses who had played the same historical figure. Debicki made audiences forget the earlier iconography and focus on a technical portrayal of institutional isolation.
In 2024, she appeared in the horror film MaXXXine, playing a film director in 1980s Hollywood. Director Ti West wanted the natural authority that Debicki projects when she walks into a room. It was a necessary change of pace, moving away from period dramas and aristocratic roles that had defined her work for a decade.
The actress keeps a strict privacy policy and doesn't use social media to promote her projects. She prefers that the impact of her work be measured by box office results or the ratings from actors' unions. In 2024, her estimated net worth was around $5 million, mainly from her contracts with major streaming platforms.
The shoot for her most recent international production in 2024 required special liability insurance due to the extreme weather conditions at the mountain locations chosen by the studio.
