Chris Pratt was living in a white van parked on a beach in Maui while he waited tables at Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. It was 2000 when actress Rae Dawn Chong noticed him while he was bringing her a plate of shrimp. She offered him a role in a horror short called Cursed Part 3, and Pratt accepted because he had nothing better to do. It was his first paycheck in the industry.
In the following years, he landed TV roles that typecast him as the friendly neighbor or the goofy jock. In Everwood (2002), he played Bright Abbott for nearly ninety episodes. But he found his real niche in pure comedy. He joined Parks and Recreation (2009) for a six-episode arc as Andy Dwyer. The character was so disastrous and sweet that the writers decided to keep him for seven seasons.
Pratt didn't have a movie star's body back then. He weighed nearly 300 pounds, and his humor relied on physical clumsiness. But the actor knew that television was a glass ceiling if he didn't change his image. So he decided to audition for major action productions even though casting directors didn't take him seriously.
Nobody expected that change.
In 2014, Pratt went from the funny sidekick to leading a Marvel franchise. James Gunn didn't want him for the role of Star-Lord in Guardians of the Galaxy, believing he was too heavy for the suit. Pratt insisted. He underwent spartan training and a strict diet for six months under the producers' supervision.
And the gamble paid off.
The film grossed 773 million dollars worldwide. That success transformed his career overnight. Suddenly, the actor who played the fool in an Indiana office was the most sought-after face for major studios. In 2015, he starred in Jurassic World, and the film reached 1,670 million dollars at the global box office. Pratt became the most bankable actor of the decade thanks to his ability to blend action with a natural charisma.
But massive success also brought public scrutiny. In 2020, Pratt founded his own production company, Indivisible Productions, to have control over his projects. He wanted to stop being just a hired actor. With The Terminal List (2022) for Prime Video, he served as executive producer and aimed for a much darker, more militaristic tone that departed from his usual jokes.
Voice work has been another major pillar of his career. In 2014, he voiced the lead in The Lego Movie, and in 2023 he starred in The Super Mario Bros. Movie. That film earned 1,360 million dollars despite initial criticism over his casting as the voice of the Italian plumber. Pratt ignored the noise and signed long-term contracts with Universal and Nintendo.
In 2024, he voiced Garfield and kept expanding his influence in animated film. His strategy is to alternate big family blockbusters with more personal science fiction projects. In 2025, he shot The Electric State for Netflix under the direction of the Russo brothers (with a budget that exceeded 300 million dollars). He also filmed the sci-fi thriller Mercy alongside Rebecca Ferguson that same year.
Production on Mercy in 2025 required the partial closure of several locations in Los Angeles during May to shoot high-intensity night sequences. The film's insurance registered a technical claim for an ankle injury the actor suffered during a stunt scene performed without doubles.
