Bradley Cooper carried suitcases at the Morgans Hotel in New York while James Lipton gave him lessons at the Actors Studio. He wasn't a lucky extra or the son of an influential producer. He was a kid from Philadelphia who, in 1999, barely managed a few seconds on screen in Sex and the City.
His looks typecast him into supporting roles as the insufferable boyfriend or the lead's best friend. In 2005, he appeared in Wedding Crashers, and audiences remembered his face, but not for the right reasons. He seemed destined to become just another disposable face in the rom-com machine.
In 2009, The Hangover arrived. The film cost $35 million to make and ended up grossing more than $467 million worldwide. That gave him the money and visibility to stop accepting every script that landed on his desk. But commercial success is often a golden cage for those seeking critical respect.
The handsome guy wanted, above all, to be a serious guy.
So he decided to change strategy and seek out directors who would demand more from him than a flashy smile. In 2011, he starred in Limitless and began working as an executive producer. He didn't want to be just the guy in front of the camera; he wanted to control the gears of the industry.
His partnership with director David O. Russell in 2012 was the real turning point. Silver Linings Playbook let him play a man with bipolar disorder, and the result was his first Academy Award nomination. Suddenly, the critics who had overlooked him started writing about his ability to convey vulnerability.
And the gamble paid off.
He reunited with Russell in 2013 for American Hustle, where he wore curlers and set aside any trace of vanity. But it was in 2014 that he proved he could carry the weight of a complex blockbuster. For American Sniper, he had to gain 20 kilos of muscle mass and spend months training with real snipers.
The film directed by Clint Eastwood became a cultural phenomenon in the United States. Cooper earned another nomination, both as an actor and as a producer. He was no longer just a movie star; he was a man with power in the offices of Warner Bros.
In 2018 he decided he no longer wanted to wait for others to call him about the best projects. He stepped behind the camera to direct a new version of A Star Is Born. Many in Hollywood thought it was a mistake to retell a story that had already been adapted three times before.
Cooper spent three years preparing for the shoot, learning to sing and play the guitar. He refused to lip-sync and made Lady Gaga perform without makeup. The film was a massive box-office hit with $436 million in ticket sales and earned him three personal Academy Award nominations.
His obsession with technical detail became almost legendary in the industry. For his next project as a director, he spent six years researching the life of Leonard Bernstein. In 2023, he released Maestro after getting the green light from Steven Spielberg and Martin Scorsese, who were originally set to direct the film.
Filming Maestro for Netflix required five hours of makeup sessions a day to age the actor. The film earned seven Oscar nominations in 2024. Despite picking up twelve nominations over the course of his career, Cooper has yet to win a golden statuette. The film had an estimated budget of $80 million.
