Karen Gillan cut off her red hair in 2013 to play a synthetic-skinned alien. There was no hesitation and no lengthy negotiations. She handed her hair over to the Marvel Studios makeup team so they could make a wig, and showed up on set with a shaved head.
That gesture defined her Scottish pragmatism.
She was born in Inverness in 1987. She grew up surrounded by the misty landscapes of the Highlands and a loneliness she could only break with her home video camera. At age 16, she decided Scotland was too small for her artistic ambitions.
She first moved to Edinburgh and then to London to study at the Italia Conti Academy of Theatre Arts. But her formal training didn't last long, because casting directors started calling her before she finished her second year. Her height and direct gaze were too useful for British television.
Her role as Amy Pond in Doctor Who transformed her career in 2010. She was not a passive companion. Her character had a dramatic weight that pushed the writers to build storylines far more complex than usual for the cult series.
For three seasons, UK audiences were obsessed with her on-screen presence. When she decided to leave the blue box in 2012, she did so with a strategy designed to avoid being typecast in British television. She wanted to try her luck in the North American industry without looking back.
And the gamble paid off.
She broke into American film with Oculus in 2013. It was a foray into low-budget psychological horror that managed to multiply its box office investment. But the real jump in scale came when James Gunn cast her in Guardians of the Galaxy in 2014.
Joining the superhero universe meant spending five hours a day in the makeup chair. Her portrayal of Nebula gained emotional weight in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. She made a supporting, robotic character feel human through restrained body language.
Audiences forgot her real face beneath the metallic prosthetics.
In 2017, she joined the cast of Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle. The film grossed over $960 million worldwide. Her role as Ruby Roundhouse mixed physical comedy with precisely choreographed action sequences. But Gillan was not content to be just another cog in the machinery of big Hollywood productions.
In 2018, she wrote and directed her first feature film, The Party’s Just Beginning. It is a raw story about grief and suicide in her hometown of Inverness. She shot the film in just 18 days on a very tight budget because she needed to tell an uncomfortable truth about Scotland's isolated communities.
In 2024, she appeared in the thriller Sleeping Dogs alongside Russell Crowe. She also joined the cast of The Life of Chuck, an adaptation of a story by Stephen King directed by Mike Flanagan. Her career shows she prefers to alternate auteur projects with big-budget contracts.
Her role in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 in 2023 marked the end of nearly a decade playing the same character. Filming her final fight scenes required a team of three stunt support specialists over six weeks of preproduction.
