Danny McBride arrived in Hollywood wearing a cheap tracksuit and with an attitude nobody quite knew how to categorize. He wasn't chasing critical acclaim or the role of the tortured leading man. In 2006, he premiered The Foot Fist Way, a comedy shot on a ridiculous budget that ended up, by accident, in the hands of Will Ferrell.
That mediocre taekwondo instructor character set the template for what came next. McBride specialized in men with inflated egos and zero ability to handle failure. His leads are usually guys who think they're legends while the world around them falls apart.
And the industry took the bait.
In 2008, he appeared in Pineapple Express and proved he could steal scenes from the biggest names of the moment. He didn't need big speeches to stand out. His physical presence and his way of delivering absurd lines with total conviction opened the doors of the major studios for him.
In 2009, Eastbound & Down premiered on HBO and audiences met Kenny Powers. He was a washed-up, obnoxious and deeply pathetic former baseball player. Yet McBride got viewers to sympathize with a man nobody in real life would want around.
The show ran for four seasons and laid the foundation for his production company, Rough House Pictures. Together with his college friends Jody Hill and David Gordon Green, he built a way of working outside the Los Angeles studio offices. They brought production onto their own turf to avoid interference from executives.
He didn't need anyone's permission to make his stories.
McBride surprised the industry when, in 2018, he signed on to write the screenplay for the return of Halloween. It wasn't a heavy-handed joke. He took the legacy of Michael Myers seriously and sought to recapture the gritty atmosphere of the original 1978 film. The movie grossed 255 million dollars in theaters worldwide.
That commercial success allowed him to close a trilogy with Halloween Kills in 2021 and Halloween Ends in 2022. But he didn't give up his throne in cable television. With The Righteous Gemstones in 2019, he raised the bar for satire by portraying a family of corrupt televangelists.
It's a business model built on loyalty.
In 2024, he lent his voice to the animated film The Garfield Movie while overseeing the expansion of his TV universe. His production company has an exclusivity deal with Warner Bros. Discovery to develop projects that break away from the conventional.
Filming for season four of The Righteous Gemstones was scheduled to begin in South Carolina in the first half of 2025.
