Jack Kehler didn't start acting until the age of 36. Before stepping onto a set for the first time, he earned a living as a waiter in dive bars. In 1982, he decided that was enough and moved to New York to study with Sanford Meisner at the Neighborhood Playhouse.
It was a late decision that shaped his entire acting persona.
His debut came in 1983 with the science fiction film Strange Invaders. It wasn't a lead role, since he never had the leading-man looks or the square jaw that Hollywood demanded at the time. But that first contract helped him get a foot in an industry that was looking for faces capable of filling the background of the frame with complete confidence.
Kehler quickly joined the Actors Studio and began working as a jobbing script actor. During the 80 years, he took part in projects such as The Year of the Dragon in 1985 and The Last Boy Scout in 1991. His ability to play everyday guys, sometimes slightly pathetic or mildly unhinged, earned him a steady flow of work.
In 1998, the Coen brothers gave him the role that pulled him out of obscurity and into the mainstream spotlight. He played Marty, the landlord of Jeff Bridges in The Big Lebowski. His interpretive dance scene in a small theater is one of the strangest and most memorable moments of late-century comedy.
Hollywood always needs actors who won't steal the spotlight but who can hold a scene together.
From then on, his presence in action and thriller films was steady. In 1991, he appeared in Point Break, and in 1995 he took part in the ambitious production of Waterworld. Kehler built up more than 170 credits on his profile, combining commercial films with high-budget television series.
But his real financial stability came with the small screen. In 2002, he appeared in Men in Black II, and shortly after began a run of guest roles in series such as Lost, Mad Men, and Bones. He was never the name up in neon lights, but he was the actor casting directors called when they needed a supporting player who wouldn't cause trouble on set.
In 2015, he landed a recurring role on The Man in the High Castle. He played Harlan Wyndam-Matson over several seasons, in one of the biggest bets of television production at the time. His face already showed the passage of time, and a sobriety that fit perfectly with the gloomy tone of the dystopian plot.
Unlike many of his generation's peers, he never tried to produce his own projects.
Kehler preferred the discipline of showing up, delivering his lines, and going home. In 2021, he appeared in the series Love, Victor playing a character named Bob. It was one of his last jobs before his health began to deteriorate irreversibly due to medical complications.
He died on May 24, 2022, at a hospital in Los Angeles at the age of 75. The cause of death was complications from leukemia diagnosed months earlier. His last recorded work was the short film The Platinum Loop, shot shortly before he was admitted to the hospital.
