Anna Faris auditioned for Scary Movie in 2000 with dark hair and only a few credits in independent horror films. That low-budget parody went on to gross 278 million dollars worldwide. The industry found in her an innate ability to sustain pure absurdity without the audience losing interest in the character.
Before that commercial hit, she studied English literature at the University of Washington. That academic background helped her understand scripts through a narrative structure that went beyond cheap jokes. But the Hollywood system quickly typecast her as the naive blonde.
Physical comedy is an art of precision.
In 2003, she appeared in Lost in Translation under the direction of Sofia Coppola. She played a shallow movie star who served as a counterpoint to the seriousness of the main plot. It was a brief role, but it showed critics that Faris could handle other registers beyond pure farce.
In 2008, she decided to take control of her career with The House Bunny. She not only starred in the film but also served as executive producer to ensure its tone didn't slip into condescension. Nearly $18 million was the initial investment for a project that ended up doubling its box office earnings.
That period established her status at the major studios. Faris realized that humor was a tool of power and not just a script resource. So she began choosing projects where the weight fell on her verbal rhythm and facial expressiveness.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2013 she made the leap to television with the series Mom. For seven seasons she played Christy Plunkett and tackled complex themes such as addiction and dysfunctional motherhood on screen. She filmed a total of 152 episodes before announcing her departure from the project in 2020.
In 2015 she launched her own podcast, Unqualified. In this space she began interviewing public figures from a position of vulnerability and deliberate lack of professional rigor. The format worked so well that in 2017 she published a book with the same title, exploring her personal and professional missteps.
But movies never stopped being her main territory. In 2018, she starred in the remake of Overboard alongside Eugenio Derbez. The film grossed more than $91 million despite mixed reviews from American critics.
The pace of work in the entertainment industry is relentless.
In 2022 she joined the cast of The Estate alongside Toni Collette. The plot centered on a family fight over an inheritance and allowed Faris to explore a much darker and more cynical comedy than is typical for her. The shoot took place entirely in New Orleans under the direction of Dean Craig.
In 2024, she joined the cast of My Spy: The Eternal City for Amazon MGM Studios. The production had a crew of more than two hundred people and was shot in various locations across Italy. The digital distribution deal was closed months before the global release.
