Christina Applegate walked into millions of homes in 1987 wearing a miniskirt and a script that poked fun at her intelligence. She was just fifteen when she accepted the role of Kelly Bundy in the series Married… with Children. What seemed like a paycheck job became a sentence of eleven seasons and 259 episodes that threatened to swallow her identity as an actress.
At that time, American television was not looking for nuance in young women. But she chose to inject her own brand of sarcasm into a character designed to be a walking cliché. So while audiences laughed at her blunders, Applegate was studying the rhythm of physical comedy with almost surgical precision.
That could have been the end of it all.
Many child actors of the 1980s faded away after their most famous shows ended. But in 1991, she tried to break the mold with Don't Tell Mom the Babysitter's Dead. It was her first real test in mainstream film, and its box office performance helped casting directors stop seeing her only as Al Bundy's daughter.
The move into professional maturity was not easy. In 1998, she starred in the comedy Jesse, but the network decided to cancel it after just two seasons despite solid ratings. It was a hard blow that forced her to retreat to the theater and to supporting roles nobody expected.
Her role in Friends in 2002 as Rachel Green's insufferable sister earned her an Emmy. It was a reminder that her gift for dry humor was still intact. Then came Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy in 2004.
On that film she had to deal with a male cast that improvised every line of dialogue. Applegate played Veronica Corningstone with a seriousness that anchored the chaos of Will Ferrell. She made her character the driving force of the plot rather than a simple ornament in a 1970s newsroom.
But Applegate is not a conventional actress.
In 2008, she was diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer. Her decision was radical and direct. She underwent a double mastectomy to reduce any future risk, and she founded an organization to help women at high genetic risk pay for screening tests. There were no sentimental statements or tearjerker exclusives at the time.
The production of Dead to Me in 2019 marked her triumphant return to the industry's front line. On this Netflix series, she also took on the role of executive producer to control the tone of a story that blended grief with the sharpest black humor. Filming the third season in 2021 changed her life forever.
During filming, she began to feel tingling and weakness in her legs. The medical diagnosis confirmed she had multiple sclerosis. Production was halted for five months so she could begin treatment and adjust to a mobility that would never be the same again.
And the industry fell silent.
In 2022, she finished filming the show's final episodes using a wheelchair between takes and leaning against walls to stay on her feet in front of the camera. It was a technical and physical effort that pushed her to the limit. At the 2023 SAG Awards, she appeared with a cane bearing the initials of her illness.
Christina Applegate received her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in November 2022. She attended barefoot because shoes caused her pain due to her illness. That event marked her last official public appearance before she focused on voice work and managing her daily health. The series Dead to Me wrapped up her run with 30 episodes filmed and multiple Television Academy Award nominations.
