Lisa Kudrow spent her mornings among test tubes and clinical forms, studying the relationship between headaches and handedness in her father's lab. She studied biology at the prestigious Vassar College and had no intention of ever setting foot on a film set. But family get-togethers with comedian Jon Lovitz changed the course of her career before she turned twenty-five.
Lovitz persuaded her to sign up for improv classes at The Groundlings in Los Angeles. There she crossed paths with Conan O'Brien and learned to build comedy through physical restraint rather than the usual histrionics.
That sharp turn worked better than expected.
In the early nineties, rejections poured in. The casting director of Frasier let her go two days into rehearsing the pilot so he could give the role of Roz Doyle to Peri Gilpin. But that dismissal freed her to join Mad About You as the absent-minded waitress Ursula Buffay.
When the creators of Friends designed Phoebe Buffay in 1994, most hopefuls played the character as a naive, bohemian singer. Kudrow took a scientific approach instead. She crafted a woman detached from the ground, with airtight internal logic, capable of blurting out outrageous things about her childhood without missing a beat.
In 1998, the Television Academy rewarded that surgical coolness. Kudrow became the first cast member to win an Emmy Award, outshining her castmates and securing unprecedented creative clout at NBC.
So movie studios began knocking on her door with predictable offers. She chose to steer clear of formulaic crowd-pleasers and filmed Romy and Michele's High School Reunion in 1997 alongside Mira Sorvino. Soon after, she starred in Opposite of Sex under the direction of Don Roos, playing a bitter, puritanical woman that earned her unanimous praise from the New York Film Critics Circle.
At the height of the TV boom, the six main cast members negotiated joint salaries of one million dollars per episode for the last two seasons. That figure gave her complete financial freedom for the rest of her life.
After the final broadcast of Friends in 2004, Kudrow refused to repeat the mold that had enriched her. In 2005, she teamed up with screenwriter Michael Patrick King to develop The Comeback for HBO. Her creation followed Valerie Cherish, a mature actress willing to be humiliated by the cameras of a reality show in order to regain her former career status.
The concept made viewers of the time uncomfortable with its lack of dramatic concessions, and it was canceled after just thirteen episodes.
Critics took almost ten years to understand it.
Time proved the wisdom of that project. HBO decided to revive the series in 2014 for a second run of eight episodes, and in 2026 it aired a third and final season focused on the havoc wreaked by artificial intelligence and the decline of the traditional production model in Hollywood.
In 2008, she founded her production company, Is or Isn't Entertainment, with actor Dan Bucatinsky. Together they conceived Web Therapy for the internet, a comedy filmed with webcams through ten-minute sessions with no written script that ended up airing on Showtime between 2011 and 2015.
Over the following decade, Kudrow avoided the exhaustion of headlining major productions and preferred to enrich other people's projects with brief, sharp appearances. She appeared in Easy A in 2010, featured in Neighbors in 2014, and took on a complex role in the British comedy Feel Good between 2020 and 2021.
In 2024, she starred in the mystery comedy No Good Deed on Netflix and headlined the adventure series Los héroes del tiempo under director Taika Waititi.
Comedic rhythm never gets old.
In 2026, she signed a production deal with 20th Century Studios to make a sequel to Romy and Michele's High School Reunion, almost three decades after the release of the original film, which cost sixteen million dollars to make and grossed twenty-nine million at the box office worldwide.

Things you probably didn't know about Lisa Kudrow
We treat sex so casually and use it for everything but what it is — which is ultimately making another human being with thoughts and feelings and rights who will grow up to be an adult.
There are some issues I'm more conservative on. As a parent, I'm concerned that there are so many young, young, young kids — like 12 years old — that are starting to have sex.
I am scared of having to see myself looking like my grandmother one day, but I'm excited to play older role
