Matthew Perry arrived at the Friends audition with a suitcase full of insecurities and a natural talent for defensive sarcasm. He was 1994. He had no idea that the role of Chandler Bing would earn him one million dollars per episode in the show's final seasons.
He was born in Massachusetts in 1969 but grew up in Ottawa. His father was an actor, and his mother was press secretary to the Canadian prime minister. Before acting, he was an elite junior tennis player. But when he moved to Los Angeles at 15 years old, he realized the racket would not give him the fame he was looking for.
He appeared in forgotten projects such as Second Chance. Then the script for Friends Like Us came along. The producers were looking for someone who could deliver mediocre lines and make them funny. Perry did it better than anyone, because his own life was a constant exercise in irony.
And the gamble paid off.
The set of the show was both a refuge and a prison. While the world laughed at his jokes about his relationship with Monica, he was fighting an addiction to Vicodin. In 1997, after a jet ski accident, he checked into a rehab center for the first time.
He didn't remember filming three full seasons.
He tried his hand at movies with mixed results. The comedy The Whole Nine Yards grossed 106 million dollars in 2000. But other bets such as Serving Sara in 2002 flopped at the box office. His dramatic work in The West Wing earned him two Emmy nominations for his role as Joe Quincy.
After the show ended in 2004, he looked for projects with more creative weight. He wrote and starred in Mr. Sunshine in 2011. The series lasted just nine episodes. The same thing happened with Go On in 2012. Audiences only wanted to see Chandler, and Perry desperately wanted to be someone else.
In 2015, he returned to the stage in London with The End of Longing. The critics were harsh. But he kept trying, because inactivity was his biggest enemy. He needed applause to silence his own inner noise.
He published his memoir, Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing, in 2022. In the book, he revealed that he spent 9 million dollars trying to stay sober throughout his life. It was an act of honesty that exposed the fragility behind the constant jokes.
His last on-screen appearance was the Friends reunion special in 2021. He looked tired and had trouble speaking. But the affection of his five castmates was the public farewell he needed in front of a global audience.
Water was always his element.
On October 28, 2023, he was found dead in the hot tub of his home in Pacific Palisades. The autopsy determined that he died from the acute effects of ketamine. He was 54 years old, and his net worth was estimated at 120 million dollars at the time of his death.
