Michael Rosenbaum arrived in Los Angeles with a suitcase and a handful of Christopher Walken impressions up his sleeve. Before stepping onto a major set, he had to get through the grueling audition circuit that breaks almost anyone. In 2001 his life changed when he agreed to shave his head completely to play a young Lex Luthor on the series Smallville.
That role required hours in the makeup chair to hide any trace of hair. But the effort paid off, because his take on the DC Comics villain moved away from the histrionic shouting of earlier versions. He built a restrained, tragic character who lasted seven seasons as the lead.
And the gamble paid off.
Despite the fame the show brought him, he chose to leave in 2008 to pursue new challenges in film and comedy. He didn't want the industry to typecast him as the tormented millionaire forever. His exit from the production was amicable (he returned for the finale in 2011), but it left a hard-to-fill gap in the storyline on The CW.
Away from the live-action spotlight, Rosenbaum found a lucrative refuge in voice acting. For years he voiced Wally West in the animated series Justice League and took part in dozens of big-budget video games. His ability to shift vocal registers let him work without audiences directly linking him to his best-known face.
In 2014 he tried his hand behind the camera with the film Back in the Day. He wrote the screenplay himself and directed the movie. It was a personal project shot in Indiana (the state where he grew up) that explored identity crises and a return to one's roots. Critics were harsh on the result, and its commercial distribution was quite limited.
It was not a bed of roses.
His luck in mainstream film changed thanks to his friendship with James Gunn. The director gave him a supporting role in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 in 2017, where he played Martinex. The character was covered in computer-generated crystals, which made it nearly impossible to recognize the actor beneath the digital effects.
In 2018 he launched the project that takes up most of his professional time today. The podcast Inside of You with Michael Rosenbaum is recorded in his home living room and takes a frank approach to discussing mental health with other celebrities. Guests on his mic have ranged from former co-stars to top Hollywood directors.
The show's format steers clear of conventional movie promotion. They talk about anxiety and the failures nobody mentions on the red carpet. That approach has allowed it to build a loyal listener community that funds the show through direct subscription platforms.
The industry is fickle.
In 2023 he reprised his role as Martinex in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 under Marvel Studios. His involvement in the shoot was limited to a few days of technical work to capture his facial movements. The budget for that production exceeded $ 250 million.
