Kevin Conroy auditioned for Batman: The Animated Series in 1991 without having read a single comic book in his life. He knew practically nothing about the character beyond the look of the Tim Burton film and a faint memory of the 1960s series. But that lack of preconceptions let him build something no one had attempted before in television animation.
His training at Juilliard and his experience in classical theater led him to portray Bruce Wayne as a dandy and Batman as a wounded creature. Conroy decided they couldn't sound the same, because the millionaire was the true mask. He was the first actor to use two distinct vocal registers to differentiate the hero from his civilian identity in a systematic way. This technical decision changed how superhero voice work was understood for the following three decades.
And the gamble paid off.
Before that contract, his career was largely stage work and supporting roles in series such as Dynasty and Tour of Duty. But Batman consumed him entirely. He didn't just read lines in a booth; he insisted on recording alongside the rest of the cast so the dialogue would have real tension. For him, it wasn't a cartoon but pure drama.
During the 80 years, he lived in a New York devastated by the AIDS crisis while trying to carve out a place for himself as a gay actor. He had to hide his sexual orientation to protect his career in an industry that did not embrace diversity. He watched much of his circle of friends die, and that constant sense of loss eventually seeped into his portrayal of the Dark Knight.
That real darkness and contained pain fueled the voice of Bruce Wayne for years. In the short story Finding Batman, published in 2022, he explained how his own personal tragedy helped him connect with the character's trauma. It was his way of closing a life cycle that he kept private for almost his entire professional career.
No one expected a Shakespearean actor to end up reigning over the world of superheroes.
But his connection to the character went beyond television. In 2009, he began a new chapter with the video game Batman: Arkham Asylum, which brought back a much rawer and more violent tone. The video game industry discovered that his voice sold millions of copies, and he remained tied to the franchise without interruption until his death.
In 2019, he fulfilled the dream of many fans by playing Bruce Wayne in live action during the CW's Crisis on Infinite Earths event. He appeared as an aged, bitter version of the hero (a nod to Kingdom Come) whose coldness left a strong impression. It was the only time audiences saw him officially linked to the character on the small screen.
His death in November 2022 from intestinal cancer left several posthumous projects that were released years later. In 2024, the video game Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League premiered, in which he gave his voice for the last time to the Batman of the Arkham series. That same year, he also took part in the animated film trilogy Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths, closing out his legacy as a voice actor.
Kevin Conroy recorded dialogue for more than 60 different productions connected to the DC Comics universe, across series, films and games. His final recording session took place a few months before he died in a New York hospital. The actor passed away at age 66, leaving an audio archive of more than a thousand hours of recorded performances.
